Taarnah: In spite of two e mails to GOG over the last week, I still haven't heard from them.
I asked you for a Circus save 4 days ago, yet you didn't send it either to me, nor to our Support guys. If you could provide us with one, it would be much easier to replicate the issue.

I can't send you what I don't have. GOG rersponded yesterday.

Since I don't check this board everyday, I was unaware or your request. Sorry. I appreciate your trying to help, but I couldn't have complied anyway, since there are no save games for MM in the GOG..Program Files 86 folder.

I've sent GOG a list of the icons in the folder. The save games are not in the main file or in sub files. Or anyplace else I could think to look.

I don't know what else to do.

Thanks anyway.

gameon: Just adding my thoughts here guys. I had issues with wing commander 3 in the past (and although i managed to find work arounds myself, and also found a save) it was difficult to know what file was actually the save file.

Perhaps you guys could point out which file type the save is for each game.

Try C:\Users\[you]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\...
Is the issue a missing save? Did you try looking in the AppData folder?

Just found them. Thanks.... What are they doing there?? I didn't do anything during install to send them there. Shouldn't GOG stuff be in the GOG folders..

Now, if I can just figure out how to Zip them..or something... and send them to GOG.

Thanks....

Windows 7 does this with most programs if you install in the default C:\Program Files....

Actually, Microsoft demands a separation of program files (like a game) and user files (like personal save games) for more than a decade now, and started to actively enforce this policy with the release of Vista more than five years ago. Other operating systems (like Linux/Unix) have done that since the 60s. This philosophy actually makes sense from a security viewpoint, it makes it more difficult for malicious software to find a place from which it can be executed. It also makes it easier in multi-user environments to keep every user's personal files tidily in one place.

You're probably expecting saves to be inside the program directory because DOS, and earlier Windows versions, have never been that concerned about security (or multi-user environments), and have not had such a separation.

If you're astonished that the save files are in your user directory, then you're clinging to an old, antiquated, insecure system structure. That's not a problem in itself (it's easy to lose track in an environment that develops so fast), but I think it's important to point out that the separation of user and program data is actually a _good_ thing. For GOG games, it also prevents several compatibility problems.

Edit: For compatibility between older games and newer Windows version, I'd recommend to install the game _not_ in Program Files (or any other protected directory), but in a separate unprotected directory, like C:\Games . It's less secure than using Program Files, but that shouldn't be an issue for games bought from here, and lots of old games unfortunately need to write files to their own directory.

Psyringe: snip
I fully support the separation of game files and save files, I just wish developers were more consistent with it. It's a mess right now and save files are all over the place.

It's best to install games outside of Program Files. Some games really have an issue with that folder and some even seem to act less buggy when you install outside that folder.

I install mine in a folder called "GOGcom".

Thanks for the tip. How do I do that.

Can you do that with games running on Steam?

Most games install to something like... C:/Program files...blah blah....

How do I change that so the game knows where to stick stuff.

I know to type it on the line in the "install" window, but I don't know how to word it.

I've read this regarding other games....install to another location... couldn't find info on how to word it so I didn't try.

Thanks....

For GOG games, the custom folder can be defined in the installer's options (see the attached picture). You then either write the folder path or click Browse and look for the folder where you want to put it (you may make one beforehand so it's just a matter of quickly finding it and clicking it). If it's outside Program Files and Windows folders, the saves should be in the game folder. In the attached picture, I'm selecting my E:\Games\ folder since it's where I put my games. It'll add the game's sub-folder automatically ("Giants - Citizen Kabuto" in the picture).

To my knowledge, you cannot install Steam games outside the Steam folder. Maybe you can install Steam outside Program Files, but I've no idea.

You can, but only using symlinks, which is messy and not really recommended to basic users.

That you most definitely can.
