Actually, no. The powers that be always claimed they were creating a socialist state, socialism being a stepping stone for true communism. Which would presumably come some time later, after people stop being, well, people and become the ideal men and women true communism needs.

I meant that they lied about aspiring to become communist nations. The lie about there being communist regimes is something largely spread by the west. I don't think that any regime claimed that it was actually, currently communist. After all, the very fact that there was a government at all would prove that a lie. Sorry if I wasn't very clear on that.

It's a great book, and his other book is great too.
Don't expect a balanced viewpoint, but as long as you keep that in mind, you can learn a number of interesting things from those books.

They claim they're moving the country towards communism, but I don't see how they can claim it actually already is given that, well there's a government there to make such a claim. Never mind the fact that it's pretty much the antithesis of no government at all.

McCarthyism lives on. His work will never be forgotten, you cannot say communism without people drawing a mental link to the word "bad". It's actually quite a noble goal. A society based purely around aiding the community, where everyone helps out, where we all get to share in each others well being. Where we all share a community. It's a nice dream, and I don't think Marxists and Communists are wrong for wanting it.

It doesn't work of course, not because communism is flawed as an ideal, but because we are flawed as a species (or at least not designed for communism). We naturally compete, try to get a bigger share of the pie. As long as there is competition there cannot be communism, and so there never will be. I still applaud the dream, it is a nice idea.

I did enjoy the fact that Star Trek First Conflict subtely (and perhaps accidentally) endorsed communism. There's a line in it where Picard explains to the 21st century girl that they no longer have money, instead society is based around a desire to better themselves, and to help build a better society. The ideal future is communism. The ideal way to get there is not.
