The developers of The Witcher franchise CD Projekt RED studio and GOG.com the DRM-free, digital distribution platform will host a Special Event on the 18th of October at 18:00 (GMT). The whole event will be streamed online on facebook.com/thewitcher or www.gog.com.

Not only console and PC users should tune in for the conference. Mac Computer users should be prepared for a bunch of thrilling announcements including more information about the upcoming release of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings for OS X.

Speaking of new operating systems, GOG.com will also be announcing that it is bringing the best PC games from throughout history to a new operating system. That’s not all of the news that GOG.com has planned for the Special Event, however: they will also be showcasing several new releases as well as giving gamers a unique chance to get some of the greatest classic games ever made for a literally unbeatable price.

Remember – the live stream from the CD Projekt RED and GOG.com Special Event starts October 18th, 18:00 (GMT). See you then!
I'm gonna guess Android; several of the GOG Blue names have been talking about playing with the Android Dosbox port and it would slide in neatly with one of them there "app" thingies that all the kids seem to think is "all the rage" now-a-days.

going with Android over full Linux would also allow GOG to sidestep the issue of what distro to support since Android only has one distro and pretty set system specifications ... though I'm gonna guess that it will be more of "tablet" support than "phone / mobile" support.

grinninglich: My hopes are high for Linux. They can start my supporting only Ubuntu. And behind Ubuntu there is Canonical and behind Canonical there is a millionare man Mark Shuttleworth.

He has done much for free software world my founding Ubuntu. This way masses met with Linux with easy installation and easy usage. Even i started to use Linux thanks to Ubuntu.

Mark Shuttleworth won't stop just getting Ubuntu to many people. But he will reach the masses known as gamers too i think. Ubuntu and GOG.com co-operation is highly possible.

Big things are coming for Linux in the upcoming days. Desura, Humble Bundle, Steam and now i hope GOG.com.

Linux is the way to go for gamers and developers. No cost, better performance, openness.

Just think about it. Buy a computer, download and install ubuntu in 10-20 minutes. Launch Steam or GOG.com games and start playing as you like. No MS restrictions, no Windows 8 Metro, no unknown bullshit version of Microsoft, no locked-in shops.
Either Mark Shuttleworth needs to throw some money at GOG, or GOG needs to do a Kickstarter asking for money so that they can support Linux, or they start supporting Linux because they want to keep up with other retailers and invest a little. Whatever the case, I just want my favorite retailer to finally support my favorite operating system as well.
I'm guessing MacOS.
That's the biggest market they could go for, I think.
I could see some games on Android, perhaps on Ouya, but it would be less likely.

grinninglich: ...no Windows 8 Metro...
I don't like Metro (well Win 8's Metro at least)... but I take Metro over Unity any day.
Man, I wonder how much time they have got in the new Cyberpunk title. Will we see screenies? Can we play as cyberbabes? Is there going to be hookers?

So many questions...

JCD-Bionicman: Why do they oppose Linux?
avatar
rampancy: Rational Justifications =/= Vehement Opposition. The post that Future_Suture's linked to was a totally justifiable reason for GOG *at present* to not support Linux, or Mac OS X for that matter – and being a Mac user, I totally agree. Yes, I want native OS X support with GOG, but if and only if they can do so with the same level of support that they have for Windows, and while still being able to maintain their ability to bring both classic and indie games to their catalog at their current pace.

Maybe things have changed and they've been able to secure the resources to bring forward a good push into Linux or OS X; I certainly hope they have.

Oh, and WTF is it with people downrepping JCD_Bionicman's prior post? I've given him some +rep to try to balance it out.
Vehement might be a bit of a strong word, but I will stick with what I said, as it was a strong message of "No, No, No." Nevertheless, I somewhat agree with the last sentence of your first paragraph, although they may be left behind at this rate. I really hope that will not be the case.

The point I was trying to make though is that GOG's people aren't intellectually or emotionally against Linux or Mac support. There's nothing at all to suggest that they wouldn't love the buckets of cash that eager and starved Mac and Linux gamers would pour on them. It's just that with things being what they are right now, they just don't have the resources or manpower to do it at the level they want – hence why it's unlikely that they'd do anything like put up "unofficial" or "unsupported" forms of their downloads for Mac or Linux users.

So the Linux request on GOG has seen over 300 votes since yesterday and has become the most voted item this week as well as jumped back into third place over all, being just behind second place now. It will probably second place later on today. The Linux community is more than keen for GOG support it seems!

Yup, I get you, but I still find it unfortunate. Like I have been saying, I do hope that changes much sooner rather than later. It can't be too long anymore anyway seeing as how the competition on the Linux front is increasing and more and more games are supporting Linux. Will GOG continue to sell only Windows versions of games when gamers can get Linux, Windows, and Mac OS versions for a similar price elsewhere?
#1: Anyone else notice that all of the promos are GOG's big "gets" in reverse order of when they arrived on GOG? Sort of a subtle "look what we've got now, but just you wait, cause we have some amazing games coming up in the next few weeks from an amazing new publisher!" Really is very surprising of GOG to be SO subtle as to not hint at all about their new publishing partner, but I can sorta see how they don't want to tip their hand too early. I bet they'll start ramping up because the 18th of October is next week! But. I think they'll take a "bigger, better, GOG-ier" approach to pushing their new publishing partner, whomever it may be.

#2: I really don't mind what the "new system" is. I'd like for it to be Linux, but I can totally see why that may not be the case.

#3: IF (big if here) Microsoft Game Studios is announced to be the big partner, will we see more PC ports of their XBLA games, like the Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Perfect Dark HD remakes (and possibly even whatever they're doing for Killer Instinct with regards to XBLA)?
I know I said Android as my own guess, but that was for logical reasons ... personal preference: get on the fucking Linux support GOG, I need to set up a dual boot but need to know what specific distro platform you will be going with.

I wonder if a new publisher will come.

I would quite like it to be THQ.

Okay, here's what is kinda getting me: are they referring to new (past 2-4 years) game releases, or new releases of classics? (Would they have referred to it as such?) And literally unbeatable price - free? I won't complain in any case, but I'll be disappointed if no new classics (arguably good or bad, as one man's trash is another's treasure) are introduced.

(If you have a few games you were planning on releasing permanently free at some point in the future, like the 7 or 9 we have now, please consider doing that with one or two during this time. :)

You realize that when this was posted, THQ had not yet filed for bankruptcy.
