GOG should make a survey about potential members in case they added support for other OSes, it would be interesting to see some actual data instead of speculation.

rampancy: But I'm not exactly betting that it's a complete ground up rewrite á la Mac OS 9 vs. Mac OS X.

Nirth: Actually that's what I think it means therefore assuming it's the same from Vista to Windows 7 as it will be for Windows 7 to Windows 8 isn't right so it's a probable chance Windows 8 will at least be one of the OSes with new support. I don't think a lot of Windows 7 people need to jump Windows 8 right away but as future proof support I think it's good especially since GOG are specifically targeted for Windows. While I can see the enjoyment for others to support Mac, Linux and others I hope they only do that if resources are enough (which I hardly believe there is aside from games run via dosbox).
Windows 8 has some significant changes in the backend. MS is keeping quiet on a lot of them. I already know that at least one program I use regularly is going to be broken because it does memory hacking, and they've changed the way memory is allocated to be more random. So supporting Win8 may take significant resources, or it may be trivial.

I think they probably are going to announce Win 8 support, and maybe Mac. Don't think Linux makes much sense yet, unfortunately.

This, I don't know why people are getting their hopes up that GOG all the suddenly are going to support Linux especially given how many times TET has come on the boards and said that (paraphrasing here) that they have no plans on supporting Linux at this time so why all the sudden do people expect that to change? Because a small group of users have been asking for it? nah I seriously doubt it.

Also you people saying their is going to be more then one new supported OS announced do know there probably going to announce support for 1 new OS right? If you read the post carefully it clearly says "GOG.com will also be announcing that it is bringing the best PC games from throughout history to a new operating system". Operating system not Systems singular not plural the new OSes in the title is CD Projekt's announcement of the Mac OS X port of Witcher 2(OS 1) and GOG's announcement of them supporting a new OS(OS 2)

I honestly think it's Windows 8 as I have yet to see anything that would lead me to believe that GOG is going to support Mac either but then again unlike Linux I haven't seen anything that has shown me that they may not have been entertaining the idea and may had/have plans to start supporting Mac, if that is the case, and mind you this is a sizable IF, it would be pretty cool to see one of the games their going to announce be Marathon again quite doubtful.
Pretty clearly the new OS is going to be Windows 8. That's fine; I'd completely forgotten that Windows had even released a new operating system, but GOG could hardly ignore it forever.

I do think that GOG isn't handling this as well as they might; according to the wishlist, GOG users who want Linux outnumber GOG users who want Windows 8 by 5-to-1. That doesn't mean they're obligated to support Linux*. It does mean that when they try to use "New operating system!" to build up interest in their event, there's going to be some pretty grumpy people when it turns out that the new operating system is the one nobody seems to care about. Instead of doing the "announcement of the announcement" thing they love so dearly, they'd probably have been better off just plainly announcing Windows 8 support, rather than drag the thing out for three more weeks.

* they're a business, and must make a judgment call about whether the new users and good will supporting Linux generated would make up for the time and effort involved.

Roman5: If SEGA joins GOG this year then I'm bumping one of my old threads and making a "Roman5 turned out to be right as always" Thread Number 2: "The sequel"
Thank you for your time and attention. Let this be a lesson to all of you.

First up, WIndows 8 hasn't been released yet so you couldn't have forgotten about it!

Second, why would GOG hype a new platform if that platform is just the next revision of the current platform? I can download and play GOG games just fine right now on Windows 8 (preview version) the same as on Windows 7, so it would be odd for them to make this out as some big deal. I'd expect Mac/Linux.

GOG & Android, eh? Cool.

It has. Final version has been available for a while now, just not to regular customers.

Short answer: because they can :)
Longer answer: because they would be the first online distributor to first officially support W8 (I think).

I'd be very surprised if they went in the Mac/Linux direction, it just doesn't make sense.
For God's sake . Promote the mod creation kit of TW2 with the release of this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_Ju8WVY2a4

Whatever the availability to developers, they're going to have massive launch events in October. That's the "real" release when it will show up to ordinary users.

What does officially support Windows 8 even mean? A label on the box? Congrats, we didn't break anything that worked before on Windows 7? Or are you actually expecting some sort of support for the Windows Store etc?

"Because they can" seems like a weak reason to disappoint all your users by announcing something that already exists by default after building up hype for a "new OS".

DukeNukemForever: ...not officially supported...
There's no place for this in a paid service. Either they do support it fully where offered or don't offer it at all.

I'm thinking they might offer Linux or Mac support where originally available (ie. games intentionally released for this or that platform) or where easily portable (ie. most DOS games probably work well on Linux DOSBox).

gameon: EDIT: It seems the windows versions of Witcher 1 and 2 are on steam......strange.
Have been since forever (or at least since the release of Witcher 2) and I'm pretty sure they're DRM-enabled, as any Steam game.

TheEnigmaticT: Everyone in EA doesn't say that. One guy says that. And I have no idea who he's talking to, but he's not talking to the same people we're talking to.
avatar
Fuzzyfireball: Start talkin to the people he's talkin to and get the people you're talkin to to talk to the people he's talkin to so everyone is talkin to each other!
Hahaha...

I'm thinking it must be more logical that GOG will start supporting Macs because there are more games originally released for Macs than Linux (wild guess) and probably there's more people on the site running Macs than Linux too.

But then I think there must be a larger group of Linux than Mac users among the older die-hard GOG fans and there has always been a lot of talk to support Linux and the community has always been making lists of Linux-compatible GOGs on the forums.

But then I suppose the Linux users might be quite used to being treated as a marginal system by companies by now.

Me? I'm a Windows and Android user, not affiliated with any of the above.

Again where are people getting the idea of Linux support is a possibility? I just find it silly to think that after all the times they said "no" to the idea of Linux with the most recent if memory serves was just a scant few weeks ago to all the sudden out of the blue go "hey were going to support it", I just don't get it.

Look not trying to piss in peoples cheerios here but if they are going to support a new non windows OS then they more then likely would have it planned for a while and have a spent a good amount of time getting at least a few releases for the new OS in the works when they made the announcement or even have a few set for release so why if Linux is a possibility why would TET still had no to it the last GOG for Linux thread that was made a few weeks back?

Elmofongo: REVIVE OLD MMORPGS LIKE ULTIMA ONLINE AND EVERQUEST 1 AND NEVERWINTER NIGHTS AOL WITH GOG SUPPORTED SERVERS!!!

....or just announce Rainbow Six Rogue Spear and Raven Shield complete and I will be happy.
avatar
DCT: You do know Ultima Online is still going right? Bioware-Mythic is still running it and I recall Everquest 1 is still going as well.
Whenever I hear of people playing Ultima Online I think I always wanted to play but thought it too expensive but then decided to pay either way but then nobody here EVER plays UO but then I think "who cares?" but then I think I hate MMO but then I think I love Ultima but then I remember this is hardly anything like Ultima and the game probably sucks anyway.
