Well I was bored so I started this vote list on dorkly, link here

My list ended up like this:

Your Winner
Shenmue 2

Runners Up

2. Silent Hill 2
3. Dark Souls
4. Resident Evil 2
5. Baldur's Gate II

what about your list? :D

EDIT: I know! I know that there are missing a lot of great sequels here, but come on it's just for fun!
1) Civilization 2

2) The Witcher 2
3) Baldur's Gate 2
4) Diablo 2
5) Worms 2
That is a lot of games I haven't played :o Regardless, there were some reaaaaalllly tough matchups. Deciding between Dead Space 2 and BioShock 2 was rough.

Your Winner
Day of the Tentacle

Runners Up
2. System Shock 2
3. Super Mario Brothers 2
4. Portal 2

I won't mention #5 because I haven't actually played it...

Also, how did Mario end up above Portal >_<
I only use a "best of" for sake of argument:

First Choice:
Day of the Tentacle

I consider equals:
System Shock 2
Diablo 2
Memoria
Carmageddeon 2
Fallout 2
The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time (Though 3 I find just as awesome)
Space Rangers 2: Reboot
Ultima VII
Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom
1: Portal 2
2: Fallout 2
3: The Witcher 2
4: The Sims 2
5: Zelda II: The Adventures of Link

Unfortunately, I could only vote for series I knew... At least Fallout 2 made the grade.
Hands down Witcher 2
mass effect 2,
system shock 2
bioshock 2
Dark Forces 2 was very impressive.
Took me a bit to figure out what was happening, but I eventually made it through. Some of the match-ups I didn't really know which was better because I hadn't played the games, but my final list seems to be pretty good The last two should probably be switched, though.

Your Winner
Mass Effect 2

Runners Up
2. Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
3. Dark Souls
4. Assassin's Creed II
5. Batman: Arkham City
Star Control II.

There are lots of great sequels. Civilization II improved on it predecessor in every way, but then again it didn't bring a lot of innovation to the table. Star Control II is a vast improvement over the first game (which was pretty fun already, albeit limited in scope), expanded the scope tremendously, and added tons of original ideas and concepts. And on top of all that, it's probably one of the best games ever made.
Witcher 2
Street Fighter 4
Mass Effect 2....with some caveats
Arkham City
Diablo 2
1. Silent Hill 2
2. Resident Evil 2.
3. Street Fighter 2.
4. Clock Tower 2.
5. Star Control 2.
Winner:
Monkey Island 2

Runners Up:
Gothic 2
Max Payne 2
Baldur's Gate 2
Tomb Raider 2
GTA: San Andreas (<- combo breaker)

Psyringe: Star Control II.

this
MegaMan 2
Warcraft 2 : an improvement in every conceivable way, except of course for the lack of cave missions :P
. it heralded the start of the awesome art design and music, ie the atmosphere, of the warcraft universe.

Baldurs Gate 2 : seeing as the original was the first game in the long series of games using that infinity engine, its no wonder they improved so massively on it with everything they learned from planescape and icewind dale.

Batman Arkham City : It improved everrrything on an already sublime game.

Warcraft 3 : Im biased here as this is my favourite rts of all time

Civilization 4 : possibly the best in the series, although with all the expansions of 5 it has become a very close affair
