TORCS and VDRIFT from the Linux World. Think there are Windows builds for both.

Or, any old XBox and Project Gotham Racing 2. Never enjoyed any game as much as Project Gotham Racing 2. Ideal mix of arcade driving and realism with emphasis on rally driving. Huge number of cars to drive.

Most importantly, the cars "felt good" to drive. They just felt right.
For single player, I'm still a fan of Grid. Racing games usually don't grab me for whatever reason, but, Grid was the exception. Very enjoyable game.
Not on GoG, but the last two that I enjoyed were:
Burnout: Paradise. On the PC is suffers a little from being a console port, but it is a solid and enjoyable game overall.
Need For Speed: Underground (can't remember if I played 1 or 2).

I am really loving GRID so far aswell, picked it up on steam extremely cheap and haven't looked back.
Thanks to problems with licensing, GOG's driving game selection isn't the mightiest around.

Theoretically Interstate 76 stands out as a quality title. But I've heard no end of complaints about the game not working properly on modern systems despite what GOG did (or didn't do) to get it working.

Did GOG ever update this title, or is it still broken?

GRID is an amazing game. For me it's just about the right mix between arcade style racing and sim too. But it doesn't sound like Tyler is going to be able to run it.

wormholewizards: Sorry to relive this dead thread. But i have a question:
Is there any possibility Nascar Racing Series (Sierra) will be released here at GoG?
Because back in the day i really wanted to play Nascar Racing 4 but at the time i couldn't afford decent PC system.
The team that did NASCAR Raing Series (Papyrus) now do another sim, called iRacing, which although a little expensive is a seriouslly good sim. Common opinion of those that use it is that it's the best sim yet, and I agree. The physics engine used for the last NASCAR games, NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, forms the base of the physics used in iRacing.

FraterPerdurabo: Need For Speed: Underground (can't remember if I played 1 or 2).
Underground 2 had the notable feature of a fully explorable city you could drive around and go to race locations and garages and the like. Underground 1 didn't have that. It was just the races and the car customisation was done through menus, rather than driving to a garage.

iRacing need monthly fees or not? I think Papyrus is spot on when it came about Racing simulator. Still, i hope their Nascar series will made into GoG list.

The second one then, not bad at all!
My opinion is that what I have played.. Grid is possibly the best. After of course gran turismo 1 and 2. Turismo 3 in ps2 wasn't so groundbreaking for me. In psx-times I also liked v-rally and ridge racer. In ridge It was just great to finally win that bastard black car in the end.. (if memory serves..)
Also liked destruction derby 1 and flatout isn't bad. And the original need for speed. Cars were like cardboard boxes but that still was great and there was that nice "first person-view" Propably first car game where I saw that (wheel and all).

Before the series picked up again with Shift, I think it was easily the best NFS. Plus now it's too focussed on realism (in terms of graphics) Underground 2 was a bit more inventive.
I don't play racing games that much anymore, but some old racing games have a special place in my heart:

1. Fatal Racing aka Whiplash (3D-accelerated version that came with my 3Dfx Voodoo card)

I've probably never had so much fun with a racing game as with this title. Hard to put my finger on what it was, but it was simply marvellous. Even my ex-gf, who generally didn't care about games, especially racing games, fell in love with this game and played it to death (not literally).

If I'm ever able to locate my original installation CD for this game, I promise I will dig my old 3Dfx Voodoo card from the closet and revive my retro gaming PC, just in order to play this game again. Hmmm, or does DOSBox nowadays emulate 3Dfx, or support Glide wrappers?

2. 4D Sports: Driving (aka "Stunts", I think)

The track editor was great, I made some marvellous tracks for this game with my brother. Also the bugs in the physics made it possible to make some memorable replays, e.g. I still have very funny replays where the car drives on its roof for some time after an unsuccessful loop, or in certain high-speed track the car jumps up like a bullet to what seems like several miles high, from where you can see the whole track below you for a couple of minutes. This game offered truly memorable WTF? moments.

3. Carmageddon 1-2

These two games would be pretty much perfect except for two annoyances:

- The first Carmageddon game tended to crash every now and then while playing. Not nice having to replay whole level just because of a game crash.

- Carmageddon 2 didn't have that problem, but then it had those annoying (very hard) "special mission"-levels. I would have just preferred if all missions were the normal "kill all enemies" missions like in the first Carmageddon game.

The little I've played the third game in the series, it didn't feel at all as funny as the first two games.

Yeah it does unfortunatly. However, if you are serious about your sim racing, it's more than worth it in my opinion. The online racing is by a long way the best I have ever experienced.

As they are stll using the physics engine from the last NASCAR sim they did, I doubt we will see it on GoG any time soon. But you never know.

I bought it off ebay a few years ago. Cost me £45! - ouch
Sorry for bumping this. I just realized that it was FooAtari who replied and suggested me some good racing simulation few months ago. At that time i wasn't familiar with GOG regular member. I never thought he was battling with his illness at the time he posted these replies.

May he rest in peace.
