Nobake: Now that it's been mentioned, there really have been an awful lot of strategy bundles. Pretty much all TBS or otherwise slow paced ones at that. Not my thing typically, and I think it contributes a lot to the "same old, same old" day-to-day feeling of this sale. Most days I'm just waiting on the timer to tick down so I can see what's coming up on the day after.

I didn't really pay any attention to the Insomnia sale, but the Summer sale was pretty much this same format. The big difference being that there was a lot more variety in the types of games on offer.

Winter hasn't been a complete loss, I've picked up a couple bundles and a few other games too. But there is very little sense of excitement or feeling of looking forward to the next day.

.........
Good grief. I'm starting to sound like some of those people I look down on. The ones that act like a 50% sale on almost everything isn't good enough, or that a game you really want to play isn't worth paying at least $5 for.
You're complaining about a lack of excitement in GOG sales, yet you didn't pay any attention to the Insomnia sale, which is by far the most exciting sale i've ever experienced as a gamer.

Hehe it's normal, we all want to catch the best offers and pay the least amount possible.
$5 is nothing for 1 game, but, in the big picture, $5 * 500 or more titles is a lot compared to 2$ * 500 (and $10+ is even scary).

I'm really hoping that the grand finale will be a sale on all the bundles that didn't win the community vote.

Some really good deals on some of them and it would be a shame for them to not see the light of day at all.
I'd love to see a Sierra bundle. :)

On a different note: Does anyone own the complete community deal? I want to get Stronghold Crusaders HD and LotR 1+2 but I'm not interested in picking up all the other games as well. PM me in case you'd want to work out a deal.
Here are bundles that appeared in the past two major sales I might have thought to also appear in this one:

Daedalic Adventures
Square Enix Cyberpunk (Thief, Deus Ex, Anachronox)
City Building (Caesar, Zeus, Pharoah, etc.)
Sierra Adventures

It was called the "Insomnia Sale," which -right or wrong- I interpreted as a night-time thing. I work nights and do not have access to GOG at that time.

Trying to catch the best deal is of course perfectly reasonable. It's when a desirable game is priced very low yet people still say it isn't worth the money that I get irritated. That's not what I do but I see it happen a lot here, and I wonder if it can be a something of a slippery slope. I know my general feelings about it, but I'm not sure I quite thought it all through before I hit "Post"

The sales went on all day. The name just implied that it would be so exciting, people would lose sleep over it (which turned out to be the case for myself and many others).

I really think you missed out.

Oh, it's a shame you missed it. :( The sale went on non-stop, day and night. And the title was justified indeed: people stayed up late or pulled all-nighters to catch THE game(s) they were looking for. It was very exciting, and since it was such a popular event I have high hopes that GOG will throw another Insomnia sale next year. ^^

I missed it as well. GOG didn't send me any newsletter on this, and I check with the site rarely. They did for the winter sale though.

From now on, this will change. I have to pay attention to GOG more often.

Hmmm. Just watched the two videos for the recommended deal of the day and came away from them with two thoughts - that Miasmata looks quite interesting, and that I could definitely go for some EnigmaticT Let's Plays.
I think it's interesting the way GOG bundles together games in a manner requiring mandatory purchase of all titles. This season we've seen steeper discounts on, for example, Dust: An Elysian Tale (on Humble Store), Guacamelee (on Steam), etc which suggested those developers might not be opposed to standalone deeper discounts. I hate to "look a gift horse in the mouth" or seem entitled, but I find GOG's sale bundle business model to be curious and somewhat self defeating.

Is it really necessary for GOG to force buyers to purchase an entire package to get a discount? The "junk" bundled in cancels out any savings on individual titles. In some cases, it makes sense to bundle together an entire line of games (like Might & Magic) but other GOG bundles just seem random, limited, and sale crippling. Am I overlooking something - is there a reason to believe VVVVVV developers would only offer a steeper discount of 66% if people also bought an unrelated product? How are sales of Lords of the Realm 1+2 tied to the equivalent purchase of Stronghold? I wonder how GOG matches games up and motivates publishers to agree to solidarity.

I'm a bigger fan of steeper time limited standalone discounts or mix & match make-your-own bundle sales.

I completely agree. Only thing I completed from the community deals was the Wing Commander bundle.

So could I, definitely! :D Does he have any Let's Plays?

I believe that one way of explaining this system might be that GOG simply tries to get more exposure for unknown games, and generate some sales for games that are mostly overlooked by people. I don't think they're trying to force "junk" on us (after all, you're free to NOT buy the bundle ;) ). But if enough titles are interesting for someone and they pick up the bundle, they may also end up with games they wouldn't have picked up otherwise, simply because they're unknown. Not only does this generate sales for these games, but more people will try them, and maybe will end up loving those games and will spread the word about them.
For example, I've picked up the Fantasy Through History bundle because I was missing Inquisitor, but I wasn't initially interested in Lords of Midnight. But since I have it anyway now, I'll try it and perhaps it will be a game I will enjoy very much, but would've overlooked otherwise. :)

IAmSinistar: I'd like to see some bundles that emphasise the lesser-known titles in GOG's catalogue. Not because I necessarily want a better deal (I'm going to buy these whether they end up in a bundle or not), but because it might expose more people to them. Here are some of the titles that I came across in a recent perusal of GOG's games that I had forgotten they carry:

The Runaway series (Runaway: A Road Adventure, Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle, & Runaway 3: A Twist of Fate)
Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor
The Manhole: Masterpiece Edition
The Shadowgrounds series (Shadowgrounds & Shadowgrounds Survivor)
Original War

I could easily see the first three bundled in a kind of adventure set, and the last two in a combat set. This would boost the visibility of these games that otherwise might languish unknown to many users. Many of the bundles have focused on titles that people already know, which I'm sure makes sense from a mercantile standpoint, but which underplays the truly rich diversity of GOG's offerings.

EDIT: Just saw this post. So it sounds like there was a bundle with the Runaway games, and possibly some of the others. I must've missed that during my holiday celebrations. Perhaps it didn't win the votes, in which case I hope GOG will make it available in the grand finale.
The Runaway games were part of the Cinematic Adventures bundle which also included the Jack Keane games. This was pitted against the winning Globetrotter's Gear bundle (Syberia 1+2, Amerzone, Journey to the centre of the Earth and Myst: Masterpiece Edition) which was yesterday's Community Deal. In case you're interested, I made a post about these here.

Wow, the JK kiss-o-death. No wonder the bundle didn't make. It sounds from your other post that it had more strikes against it as well. I'll pick up the Runaway games as they are, it's a deal for all three under $10 combined. (Even though I already have the first two from another site, more and more I want to integrate the games I own under my GOG account where possible.)

I only recently noticed that voting was enabled for the bundles again. After the big Solstice day sale, I forgot to start voting for bundles when that resumed. But in most cases I either have just about everything from a bundle I want, or it comes packed with one or more titles I don't care for. So in all likelihood I'll just buy all the ones I want at the already generous 50% off discount. Probably will still wait until the last day of the sale though, just to see what the grand finale encompasses.

Thanks for the info mate!
