pds41: GoG uses 4GB. However, 4GB at least makes some sense as it's the maximum file size under a FAT32 volume (makes sense in that it prevents additional support queries from someone transferring files under a FAT32 rather than NTFS or alternative).

1.8GB is an interesting one - I can't think why they would settle on that limit (I recall that some earlier versions of ZIP Manager had a 1.8GB file limit, and that some versions of SAP struggle with larger than 1.8GB data extracts), but I don't think it's tied in to any overarching system architecture.

[Edit] Post above appeared after I started drafting!
Inno setup is 2GB max (https://jrsoftware.org/ishelp/index.php?topic=setup_diskslicesize), I believe gog have modified Inno Setup to get 4GB (I do agree 4GB makes sense, I assume inno is so old that they had 2GB for FAT16?)

fronzelneekburm: I inquired about whether the Zoom version of Hatred has mod support, but didn't hear back. Fool me once, shame on... shame on you. So I'll be holding off on getting Hatred on Zoom until a reliable source can clear that one up for me.
I've tried with my zoom copy & nothing. I got the mods Super Not Important & Hatred: Color Mod BETA from moddb & they didn't work the same mods are on steamworkshop so my guess is they are from there.

I hope this helps.

SlackR84: Regarding the file sizes - we use inno setup. They spilt files at 2GB. The extra 48MB annoys me far more than you would understand - I often reorganise files etc to make them fit as a 2GB one part installer, than multiple parts.
In my experience, GOG also uses InnoSetup, and I have made an MD5 checking program that uses InnoExtract, and GOG split to EXE and where necessary 4 GB (or less) BIN files. I also use my checking program with my ZOOM Platform purchases.

Yes I know, but inno doesn't support 4GB files. It must be a gog modified version of inno. Post above has the documentation from inno saying 2GB is the max.

fronzelneekburm: I suppose the best way to go about it then would be to put the pdf into a zip file.
avatar
Timboli: Yes indeed, and GOG for instance, mostly do that.
I think that one is a matter of opinion, tbh. As SlackR84 mentioned, some might see it as annoying to have to unzip a zip file just to get to a pdf. I agree it would be nice though, if you could right-click and open the pdf in a new browser tab.

How about we make links open in a new tab? Then installer files should just download as normal, pdfs would open in a new tab (you can save pdfs that are open in your browser) and it means you don't need to click back and miss where you were browsing on the site?

Really don't feel like gog forum is a place for this type of feedback though. You can come to us directly

Of course, but as things currently are it might be better to have zip files. Don't think I have ever read anyone complaining about them here at GOG, and they have a much bigger customer base.

Anyway, it is not an issue for me, and being able to open in another tab is certainly good enough, and with PDFs you usually have a save option, and at that point while displaying in your browser it has already downloaded, so only a little extra fuss to do a save to another location. But I guess, if people don't like to do the extra unzipping, I guess they might not like doing the extra saving as well. Who knows.

Mmmm that is a bit strange, and I wonder why they have that limitation.
I know they do cater for GOG, with some extra specific switches (parameters), as they are listed in InnoExtract.
Perhaps InnoSetup provided GOG with a special version that does 4 GB splits or there is a secret switch for that ... or as you say, GOG have modified it themselves. There is also some RAR element to it I believe. So perhaps the RAR element is doing the 4 GB files.

I dont think Inno added anything, you can make your own custom parameters with some pascal. Same as their custom interface.

I suspect the 2GB limit is due to FAT16 and the fact inno setup has been around since the dinosaurs. It should be increased though IMO.

You may well be right.
It has been many many years since I last played with InnoSetup.
And many years since I created my own Installer Creator program, that I rarely bother with now.
I went through a period where I liked to see my programs with Registry install and uninstall entries.
Mostly now I just use ZIP or if I need an installer I use 7-Zip.

Looks like they could be using rar files renamed to .bin and the inno installer is actually just decompressing the rar archives.

Yes, that would appear to be the case, and I have had InnoExtract fail with the rare GOG installer, when it comes to the BIN files, which appeared to be RAR related.

While my program throws only the EXE file at InnoExtract, InnoExtract will also process any related BIN files at the same time. My program does also use UnRAR for a single BIN file, folder separated if need be from a related EXE file. This is in testing mode, and with any rare GOG installer that failed.

PM me if you have any luck!

Three Oddworld games are currently discounted and a great price. Good to see some more discounts happening.

Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee

Though of course all three, last I looked, were (are) also available at GOG, and that is where I bought them some time ago.

EDIT
My ZOOM Checker program has been updated to v1.8, and includes a fix for a show-stopping bug with price checking, due to the addition of three more fields by ZP (Slug,Developers,Publishers - all unused by my program). Added two buttons. New screenshot.
