Hey guys! Just a reminder that whether you're interested in the next Witcher game or not, please keep it civil, on topic, and respect others' opinions. Have a great week!
As long as it's third person! Really like the Witcher series.

ASHLIIN: Will you buy Witcher 4?
I will only buy if Gerald will be the main hero, not like in the meh series.
So: you won't buy it, then.

Translated from a German Gaming site:

Will there be a Witcher 4?

First the good news: Following the global success of "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt", CD Projekt Red has confirmed that there will be a sequel.

"The Witcher 4" has been in the works since 2022 and is set to be the start of an entire trilogy.
At the same time, the company is also working on a remake of the first "The Witcher" from 2007.

However, CD Projekt Red has already confirmed that the new trilogy will not explicitly focus on Geralt of Riva.
The Geralt saga came to an end with "The Witcher 3" and the two expansions "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine".

timppu: I found the combat system at least in the first game very weird, I first misunderstood it and tried to play it like some kind of hack'n'slash arcade game.

Then again so was the Gothic 1 combat system weird at first, after awhile I got a hang of it.

So, if not Geralt, who will be the main character in TW4? Geralt Jr.? That blondie, Ciri-whatshername?

I am 87% certain that if not Geralt, the main character will be female, possibly black. Fits right in. I'll be very surprised if it will be some retro-sexual macho man, like Geralt.
I've not played The Witcher 3, but by watching gameplays and reviews, I thought it was quite obvious for everybody that the next protagonist was always going to be Ciri.

Also, as an edit, even by not playing The Witcher 3, [SPOILER ALERT...? If this can even be considered spoiler at this point...] I know that the endings focus on Ciri's interactions with Geralt, so its... uh... quite natural for The Witcher 4 to be Ciri's game and story after what happened in The Witcher 3.

No idea at this stage, but as usual it will be down to blurb, reviews, video, screenshots and especially price ... and if DRM-Free of course.

The fact it is part of a series etc I like, will also count somewhat.

Extreme96PL: This wasn't dev from Sweet Baby, but dev from Insomniac and she said that Sweet Baby is great studio and said that her goal is to inject DEI propaganda into the games she works on. If we ignore the obvious part about Sweet Baby, I have no idea who thought hiring the writer-dev from Insomniac was a good idea. I could understand if they hired someone who designed the combat system, but Insomniac's writing is awful and cringe.
Yeah, story writing isnt exactly Insomniac's strong suit. Ratchet and Clank really doesnt have one. Spiderman 1 was great, MM is a rehash of 1, and 2 has been heavily criticized for its story.

So apparently CDPR hired Mary Kenney who previously worked with Insomniac on Marvel's Wolverine.
https://www.yahoo.com/tech/wolverine-ps5-narrative-lead-leaves-123059024.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmluZy5jb20v&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKHeNOFga3TElh8JTwPeqx9S-mLoaV7b2yH4Iqb6giEh9On6qKM1I2ffx1fPS9OtO24X3whK9R6MqNnJOXZVFPCT-Se25K3CGK43bFZGll2g7y6t5Edl1jn2PKxBF2f7AuTyvohSByesaIgRPCXZH5fSUttS7Z01-j9pc50on7JQ

Obviously cant judge Wolverine's story since it hasnt been released yet.
EDIT: She also apparently worked on R&C Rift Apart and Miles Morales. Havent played Rift Apart so cant judge but MM had a bad story. Literal rehash of Spiderman 1 except the main villain wasnt sympathetic. Did not care for the Tinkerer at all. I did enjoy the game for its good gameplay and some fun bosses.

It really depends and there is an argument for CDPR to not go down the Ciri road.
Ciri becoming a witcher is one of 3 endings in the Witcher 3. Making Ciri a witcher in 4 essentially confirms that is the "canon" ending and some players may dislike that. Ciri is also did not go through the trial of the grasses so is not a witcher which some people may take issue with. Howeever, given Ciri already has a moveset (although would need to be toned down if she were the main character) and she already has a fanbase and connection with Geralt, having her be the next lead makes sense imo.

It would depend on gameplay trailers but I will likely buy and play the game. Witcher 3 was a very good game and really only needed a better combat system to be better (although the existing combat system was already quite good relative to other games). It would be a game I would be keeping an eye on along with the Witcher remake.

It seems to me they shouldn't follow the idea to develop their next games and characters story based on which ending was or wasn't preferred by the players, but to follow a character's arc based on their personality of the books and their endings or possible endings.

This way even though the games are different from the books in 'some areas', they might still be faithful to The Witcher's universe and characters personalities.

I'm not saying that Ciri becoming a Witcher ending should be made canon, but that if that makes sense in her character arc / personality development through the original story in the book, and if that makes sense into her character choices when the player gave her the opportunity to do so in the game, then this should be the team's choice imo.

By that I mean that Ciri (or any well develop character from books or games really) are not what their fans think they are, or even the projections fans make of them, because, at least when we treat them as probable real persons, they do have objective and subjective choices they would make in a situation based on their personality, overall character and congruence with their in universe past choices.

So even if majority of players would hate her being a Witcher, if this would make sense for her to become, and in universe this should and would be her choice, then she should be made a Witcher in The Witcher 4. As this is just an example, I'm not taking into consideration all the other consequences of player choices in The Witcher 3 that would make her decide to go this path in end, so in this example for the purpose of the discussion, I'm only evaluating this objective fact "Ciri a Witcher", and not "For Ciri to become a Witcher in The Witcher 3, the player need to make Yennefer mad.".

I'd like to add that I don't think Ciri *need* to be a witcher for her to be a protagonist in a game called "The Witcher" as we all know "The Witcher" is Geralt anyway, and Ciri is deeply related to Geralt (unless I missed something and Vesemir is "The Witcher" in the title. :P).

I'd also like to add that today Ciri is probably more beloved than Geralt given how well made and lovely (as with care) The Witcher 3 team made her in said game.

To explain what I mean, if we also take into consideration that the player plays Geralt, they tend to make the actual Geralt a 'non-character' in the story, viewing themselves in-character shoes and deciding what they would if they were in Geralt. Thus, Geralt is not himself, as in the books, necessarily. The player is Geralt, deciding to love Yennefer or Triss more, being a "good father to Ciri" or "treating her too harshly" and so on with The Witcher series many impactful decisions.

Because of this, the player creates deep connections with Ciri, Yennefer/Triss and all Geralt's friends, or enemies.
Of course this might not be true with players that know the books and play the game deciding not what they would, but what the "real Geralt" would. Those are excluded in this case.

We can be sure The Witcher 4 will sell well simply because of how good The Witcher 3 is and the cultural success it became in the gaming community. The game will only fail if they change beloved characters (like Ciri) so much that this would hurt how people viewed / judged them in their appearances in The Witcher 3, if political / Woke propaganda destroys any sense of story or characters arcs in the game, or if roleplaying with impactful choices are non-existent, hurting the series from what it is well known and beloved for since The Witcher 1 came out back then.

This is all just my opinion anyway.
Sorry for the wall of text. I like to discuss characters and how people perceive them. :P

I dunno, haven't seen the game.
But so far I feel like I won't.

What I def. won't buy is Demake of Witcher 1 which gonna be casualized for "modern many peopel".
I like the combat of W1; Graphics is fine too. No need to waste resources on demakes.

I really hope 4 is as unrelated to the previous games in terms of story and characters as possible. The best thing they could do, in my opinion, is to make it a prequel set long before Geralt's time. That way they would have the most freedom in telling a new story without having to make any choices in 3 "canon" (none of it is really canon, but still), or running the risk of ruining the nice sense "finality" that Blood & Wine had.

Also, the whole point of the The Witcher stories was always about how the world is moving away from monsters and Witchers, all of them dying out, other races also either assimilating or disappearing... there's just not much sense in moving even further along the timeline and having a world where there's still a ton of things for a witcher to do. Go back to when the world was overran by monsters, and there were plenty of witchers, and let the player just create a new one for themselves. The Trials should provide a great character creator :D

Only if it's called Witcher 4: Witch Harder.

I'm only kidding. I have to see what my financial situation is and if the game interests me or not.
I fear the 4th game curse. Mass Effect 4 (Andromeda), Diablo 4, probably something else 4, oh and also
Dragon Age 4 - which after previews has been said to be a potentially decent game just doesn't feel like
Dragon Age....

Cant really do this because CDPR already kind of went "off-book" with the games. Not only was Geralt supposed to die at the end of the books (which he doesnt in the games), there is Ciri with her actually having special powers thanks to her "elder blood" as opposed to that being a prophecy that was more about her descendants and something more to do with fighting climate change rather than ancient beings. The endings also do a good job of all fitting with "what Ciri would do" to the point I believe a Youtuber theorized that the endings were all "the same but in different moments" which I think CDPR denied which is why the endings are good imo.

This is definitely why they had the Geralt has amnesia in pretty much every entry in the games (so he can make choices that he wouldnt have made in the books). They can do this to Ciri too I suppose though.

I think this is the big fear everyone has. While I dislike the term "woke," I have noticed that stories following this "agenda" always suffer from the same issues that make it boring and predictable. The character, usually a woman, is flawless. When they get accused of doing something bad or wrong, especially by men, its revealed that they were actually right and the woman was right. Im honestly surprised that HZD was not criticized for this when they did the same thing frequently, especially with their side characters (Aloy being "flawless" because she is the "chosen one" kind of makes sense but HZD is set in a matriarchically world except men are still morally compromised or otherwise incompetent).

I do think this is why people are worried about the new writer joining the team. Having played through Witcher 3, I do think the story writers did a good job (Geralt is not always right and limited by his knowledge at times. Yen if arrogant as usual but does show signs of opening up and depending on Geralt. Ciri does get into trouble and needs help due to overextending herself and not having full control of her powers). I havent played CP2077 so cant really comment on character arcs there. CDPR did basically not bend the knee when Anita basically told them "hire me for better DEI in your games because Witcher 3 had bad writing" so I do think they know what they are doing.
I liked Witcher 2 & 3, so wouldn't mind another entry into the series.

I intend to build a new PC sometime next year, but there is no telling if it will be adequate for the next entry in the series.

It was just maybe confusing and easy to misunderstand at first, that's all. Nothing inherently wrong with it I guess.
