Cue the tirade of hate and garbage posts over an optional perk.

Bonus points for balking at my use of the word "perk."

It would be useful if at least we would get some exclusive info related to games we have on Wishlist or subscribed (there could be such a feature... here I am, asking GoG for more features again).

For instance, I know that the "Happily Ever After" DLC for Heads Will Roll: Reforged is about to hit the GoG store because the devs said so when I asked on Steam. So say you have the game on Wishlist, or that you own the game and is subscribed to it (a feature that could exist, you know... like we have on Steam). Then you would get an email announcing that the DLC is about to hit the store.

Because the way things work now you have the same info that is available on the site, and the info you get is not that tailored to you. The only info you get tailored to you is sales of your Wishlisted games, that's all, the rest is all hit or miss (say I'm not interested in [Theme X] sale, but that's what's going to be in the newsletter - I can't opt out, either I receive all emails related to the sale or I have to opt out of the Newsletter).

edit: something else to consider is that certain News posts like this one probably aren't for the "regulars" of the GOG forum community, but people who happen to check out the News section on the front page - kinda "wanderer"-types, curious but uninvested in GOG so far. (Granted, News being at the very bottom doesn't exactly help. ;)

I assume GOG is pushing the newsletter (and providing small benefits for doing so, like little extra percentage off) because it can help get eyeballs back onto their site, for people who might not otherwise remember (like those who might have a few games on GOG but the vast majority on Steam). Which I get, and I'm not exactly upset over it. (that said, I'm not gonna subscribe; like, I'm here every day anyway :P)

Makes sense. I subscribe, but I'm not sure I should.

Maybe an extra-discount will show up that interests you in the future? (Assuming the probably 5% difference between the site and Newsletter would be meaningful to you)

Otherwise, yeah, if you're not going to forget about the store, might not be any real reason to stay subscribed. shrug

The exclusive discounts are great. Just recently, I bought Dying Light Definitive Edition for only 5 €.I unfortunately missed Frostpunk GOTY for 7 € but might pick up Days Gone with the promo coming soon.

Amazing! All that, and all I have to do is let the GOG marketing team decide my fate!

But really, what's the bulwark, what misguided metric is being chased this time? Is it not enough engagement?

Why should I need to subscribe to the newsletter of a store I am already giving patronage* to already? Why should the newsletter subscribers be the ones getting the exclusive deals? I don't get exclusive deals from Peter's Gourmet Market, Stash Tea, Giant Eagle, Foodland, nor even Aldi because I picked up their catalogue/read their online catalogue.

GOG isn't a bespoke store like Costco, where membership comes with actual benefaction to the shopper. I can't walk into the building in Warsaw and ask for a hot dog at 1.25$.

And before you say that GOG has X, Y, or Z benefit, I'd like to remind people they've sure walked back a lot of their principles in the name of chasing AAA.

Now, if I were GOG, I'd partner with a cool company like Fangamer, so that you get a circular discount on merch or on game you bought merch from.

*(Hypothetical patronage/past tense.)
GOG has made many threads like this which aim to promote GOG's Newsletter and entice new subscribers to sign up for it.

But as I've pointed out also in those previous threads which are exactly the same as this one, GOG's goal to promote their Newsletter is utterly defeated by GOG's continued allowance of the "Newsletter Discounts" thread to remain open.

No one is going to sign up to the GOG Newsletter in order to get (not actually) "Newsletter exclusive discounts," whilst GOG forever allows for those very same (not actually) "Newsletter exclusive discounts" to be posted liberally all over this forum.

Yet GOG apparently continues not to see how they are ensuring that no one new has any compelling reason to sign up to their Newsletter because they are entirely negating the very same main selling point of it ("Newsletter exclusive discounts") that they are at the same time promoting.
