hedwards: From where I sit, Mr. Gog just doesn't give two shits about the forum. And that's a much bigger problem. You've got people blatantly trolling the forum with no consequences.

Ultimately, until and unless Mr. Gog sends actual mods into the forum the only reasonable course of action is to stop feeding the freaking trolls. The only thing that makes the trolls go away is if they can't get enough lulz to make it worthwhile. Having entire threads as dedicated scoreboards is clearly not working for the purposes of reducing the scamming/trolling.
The forums need mods , that's a fact , i cant deny it.

But those mods need tools to act properly, if they don't have the proper tools, that doesn't serve any purpose, aside to lock some topics. (which is the last course of action)

Back to the OP concern, there's no proof he / she tried to scam someone, he/ she could have made a mistake. Can't others users accept some newcommers could make mistakes ?

But the states of the forums need a total rework of them , it's just a shame to leave those in this actual state and doesn't help the newcommers :/

hedwards: Well somebody has to. It sends a shitty message to newcomers when they get falsely accused of being scammers. I personally wouldn't be here at all if the community had treated newcomers as poorly when I joined as they do now.
I'm not around the forum as much as I used to, but it's not all newcomers right? Only newcomers who exclusively focus on giveway entering and such things. That does make sense to me.

monkeydelarge: I think you are looking at the past with rose colored glasses. This forum hasn't changed much since 2010 when it comes to the level of toxic behavior. Yes, there are more scammers now, more bullying and more Scooby Doo type villains but this forum has never been a "good" place. It was never some kind of paradise on the internet. I don't think it is possible for a forum on the internet to be a "good place" without moderators(who are fair).

If you don't know what I mean by "Scooby Doo", check this out(not sure if it is well known in the UK).

Compared to how it is now it was a paradise.

I may have rose tinted glasses but I remember taking part in convo's daily and being able to have nice chats with people. Now all i see is shit posting.

Once upon a time the staff never even had to look at the forums, we were trusted to behave. that is long gone.
Because fuck you. That's why.

hedwards: In one case the action is wrong, and the trolls win. In the other case the action is correct and you've just fed the troll.
Nah, the troll is fed only when he wins.
That's why that discussion was funny XD

avatar
hedwards: I'd like to see some actual proof that the accusations and witch-hunting have actually brought some sort of positive change to the forum.
What do you expect, stats and identikits as proofs? Get real..
At least we're doing something, contrary to you.
The most positive change is that people are more aware of the scammers when trading or doing GAs.

Exactly.
And we don't even consider them alts immediately, without some clue.
Certaily we are more wary now.

The problem is that it's not just a matter of excluding newbs, it's labeling them as scammers by virtue of not having a high rep count and being here for a period of time.

I think most newbs would understand if they have to build up a bit of a reputation before they get access to things like that. But, it's really, really hard to build up a reputation and get the rep points needed to participate if people are accusing folks of being scammers and downrepping them.

You can pretty much tell which newbs are the scammers, they only hang out most frequently in the giveaway or other free shit threads.

You're an idiot if you think that. Every time there is a thread like this, a thread accusing somebody of scamming, a thread announcing the most recent episode in the continued saga of trolls or somebody shut out over questionable accusations of being an alt for NES, the trolls are fed.

Are you seriously so ignorant of the ways of the internet that you can't comprehend that? Jesus H. Christ, it's like I'm dealing with the mentally enfeebled here. Meanwhile, the rest of us have to put up with a forum that's full of this garbage posting.

My point there is that if you can't point to some actual evidence then you have absolutely no right to pretend like this serves any other purpose than letting a few selfish individuals think like they're doing something. It's sure as hell not stopping the trolling, scamming and cheating in contests.

This is the fucking internet. Every forum has trolls and ever time you make a trade there's a possibility of being scammed. That's why sites like eBay have rules in place and guidelines to help reduce the likelihood. Anybody who comes here and doesn't know that it's possible to get scammed is a fool.

Which is always possible because there are no standards. Read through those scammer lists and it's about 90% he said-she said with a bit of squinty eyed readings to round out the balance. There's no quality control and there's no reason why anybody should have any faith that the list is even accurate.

I agree that the folks that just hang out there are probably not the sort of people that we want to encourage to be members here. But, I'm not sure you can generalize leeches to being scammers like that.

Going to say the "leeches" with incredibly horrible english, try as they might, are usually most likely NES alts also.

Indeed. There were always problem children here, but it's gotten way out of hand.

But, also keep in mind that back in the day TET was hanging out here quite a bit, Judas, Firek and a couple others come in here fairly regularly, but at least 16 hours out of the day there's no adult supervision of any sort and even during the 8ish hours of the day that there's somebody coming in, there's no bans or even warnings going out.

Back in times of yore, the main rule wasn't to treat the other forum goers disrespectfully, but even that's no longer enforced as far as I can tell.

Threads like this are some of the worst shitholes on the forum though. You've got people who genuinely believe that they're trolling of alleged scammers is doing something useful. Even if we assume that the accusations are always correct, that still just leads to more shit posting in the forum.

Well, everybody was thinking it. I'm just the one that said it. There's no way of reading your posts that would lead a person to think that you've given any of this any actual thought.

(For me at least) it's the other way round. I try and give the benefit of the doubt to newbs if their rep count is not high. But a high rep (even larger than 1 point per day) with almost no searchable posts on a newb is the leper's bell of a scammer's alt.
