I have never seen, only figured it out thanks to the Pentagon hint. I might check it out, once I've done away with some of my movie backlog, it looks interesting enough.

AHA! Finally tickled the memory - another film I watched many years ago on SBS. Had to google the phrase movie dig tunnel time travel to get the title:

The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey

That's it! A good little movie, feels a little like Bergman making Les Visiteurs.
