Well, given that we now have people who know the answer, let's not hold back on the hints.
Extra hint:
Release date - 2005
Was one of the latest addition to my collection of retail games. Surprisingly fun. The AI is not completely dumb and when an enemy mech has a long ranged laser weapon for example, it will hang back at a distance from you and wait for you to come to them. It will also generally not just walk at you and let you kill it through a chokepoint. Death = having to start the level over, so you have to be pretty tactical with conserving your health. Bobbing and weaving with the manually engageable shield (which disables weapons except the mine layer), having to aim at surprisingly nimble enemies and avoiding their fire, figuring out ways to approach "campers" and such has had me entertained so far. Was playing on the hardest (EXTREME) difficulty until like level 12, but all that difficulty does is that it removes most of the health drops. Which eventually became an extreme slog, having to wait minutes for an enemy to make mistakes because losing any health could prove fatal. One difficulty below (Very Hard), the enemies seem to behave the same and the only difference is that every kill now drops a small medkit, making the game flow much better. Still hard as hell though. Enemies with lasers are basically hitscan aimbots, so you have to come up with some good strategies of approaching them. AI has a weakness for when you are right on top of them, it can't re-aim at you fast enough if you keep running circles around them and can usually dispatch most anything. If they are alone. And approaching them can sometimes still be quite difficult. Minigun enemies can be skirmished normally, but anything with a laser requires a completely different approach, usually involving engaging the shield and boosting towards the enemy, utilizing the shield invulnerability window to close the gap.
The levels are just arena scenarios, so no real campaign. After every level you complete, you gain 3000 extra credits to your bank. Given the price of some of the ultimate weapons/systems, it could be a very long game.
