Knockoffs. "Inspired By". The serial numbers filed off. I'm sure everyone has a term for this; when a second class product tries to pass itself as the intended target, in spite of obviously flawed workpersonship or being obviously shoddily made as a cash grab.
I've found that GOG has a problem with picking the Also-Ran instead of the Pedigree. And I know that can't always be helped, but sometimes the choices seem to be blatant favoritism or missing on purpose.
For example:
Balatro, the zany draw poker game where you can introduce new rules.
The suspicious substitute? GOG's team shrugged and said, "Solitaire is a card game, right?"
The timing, if not on purpose, did feel a little insulting.
Next up: Goat Simulator. The intentionally bad wacky physics game.
The bad substitute? A clucking cockup of a junglefowl game that looks like it stole all the assets that could be found in the Unity store.
And it goes on like this.
You want Euro Truck Simulator/American Truck Simulator? Too bad, here's a single US State; mixed reviews.
These of course, aren't all bad, but we typically give those more positive monikers like "spiritual successor". This thread isn't about those.
