Pidgeot: That would be too restrictive and potentially cut out a lot of legitimate posts. Some people are not too comfortable with English and end up using their own language (sometimes with a machine translation); those people would be caught by your proposal.

phaolo: How many games are available in Chinese,Korean,Japanese,Turkish on GOG? About 6
How many games are available also in Russian on GOG? About 12 (6 are the same)
How many users aren't going to use english or a translator to ask info about them? I'll guess a statistic: 0,001%
For the time being, in my opinion, banning those languages to block spam doesn't seem that bad..
About half a year ago, I had to help a woman from Japan get one of my programs working. She didn't speak much English; she had to write in Japanese or use machine translation.

When dealing with spam, it's not sufficient to look for things spam messages have in common - you need to find things they explicitly *do not* have in common with legitimate messages, and then filter on those. Restrictions on character sets isn't one of those things.
I would suggest a certain amount of sampling. If one user opens the exact same topic several times, jam his account.
Would of course need some resources...

Gearmos: No, not again... ^_^U

GOG should add Google Captcha for registration, it's easy for people but hard for bots.
No they shouldn't. Captcha are hard for humains, even impossible for those with some visual impairment, and cheap for bots. Google reCaptcha makes it even worse: if for whatever reason google doesn't like you, they'll give you captcha made of chinese character, weird stuff that don't exist in any current language, and mathematical functions.
The only good way to fight spam is heuristics.
I hate captcha, as i have severe myopia. Most of the times, the damn things are put in forms and shapes that my eyes can't comprehend. I have a hard time recognizing them. So, yeah we need a different method...And the hearing option for captcha....horrendous. I can't make over half of the stuff that is usually said....
And they're back again in the french forum.

MarkSpam V3.3 bookmarklet

Red "B" - bot - mark all posts of this user.
Green "U" - real user - unmark all posts of this user

For pages and pages of spam, use the previous versions that automatically select all posts (careful!).

Eheh, the old ones have served me well. ;)

EDIT: The new version works great too.

Marked all, but they need more votes. The oldest has a broken link, it cannot be reported.

FYI: I written support about the spam thread with the broken link in the French subforum. Since it can't be opened, it can't be reported. They will have to delete this one manually.

Good night, people :-)
