It's been a few years since I last looked at this thread and wow. Just wow. Some really amazing stuff here.

Thanks. Trying to get back in the workflow...

stylez82: IMO Galaxy should have some built-in way of sharing/browsing/using user-created covers.
... or user generated content in general. It will be quite some time until they implement such things, they can hardly keep up with the things they have planned so far.
A question for the makers here (Stuff, CowboyBebop, Mobeeuz, ...):
Where do you find those "clean" front covers? Whenever I search online for them, I get the retail covers with the Age/PC-DVDROM/etc... labels on it.

Your best bet is to find press kits for the games on developer and publisher sites. A good search engine for images helps a lot too.

But that's for new(er) games. I can't imagine that there are press kits around for games from 1993 or 2001?
Good image search engine, like what? (I use Google or DuckDuck)

Still, thanks for mentioning those press kits. (Hi-Res) Portrait rectangular artwork for digital-only releases can be hard to find.

Additionally I use Ixquick and Ecosia. Both are quite good. Covers for older games I find mostly on sites like Mobygames. With some luck I find clean covers, but often I have to retouch them.
Maybe the others have some secret sources I don´t know of?

The only way of 'retouching' retail covers (from Mobygames) I know of is some heavy cropping. But in many cases that also crops away part of the game title.

In some cases I had to crop an image, but then I used a similar image with lower resolution and upscaled it, so that I was able to replace the missing part. It´s pretty fun to find new solutions for different covers. However, sometimes I simply wasn´t able to make a cover I would like to, just because I couldn´t find any suitable resources.

EDIT: It´s always good to have a transparent png of the game title, so that you can cover up the original cover in case you cropped it.

I make virtual DVD cases for my GOG games using mostly the covers on http://www.gogcovers.com/
(I like physical game boxes too, but I don't trust the durability of DVD-Rs)

I can do some creative retouching in Photoshop, but for (around) 80 games (not found on gogcovers.com), that's A LOT of work.

I have the same problem :)
What program is that in the screenshot?

Launchbox
It can import your entire GOG library and download all metadata. Next huge undertaking for me is to link(/embed) all my downloaded Youtube trailers to the games.
