muntdefems: Forgot to mention it: a changelog was added to this game, but no file was updated. Did someone forget to upload the new installers?
The floppy disk version is an extra. The version I backed up in June is 2.0.0.2, while the current one is 2.0.0.3, but I'm not sure if it changed now or somewhere in between (I don't see any such mention in this thread).

You're right. I also have the 2.0.0.2 version backed up since last October, but if you downloaded it in June I guess it's safe to assume the change has taken place today.

I've taken a look at it, and I think it all boils down to mrkgnao not owning this game. Under this circumstances, MaGog gets this game's info from the 'limited info' API, which lists this file's size as 23,068,672 bytes, both before and after the update (incidentally, I do get different file sizes for both 2.0.0.2 and 2.0.0.3 versions, and none of them coincides with that figure :P). Furthermore, GOG doesn't bother to put a version to extras, so there's no actual change in the info provided by the API for this file.

[CHANGELOG UPDATED]
Patch 1.1.0 (08 September 2016)

- We’ve reached a milestone in our ongoing improvement work on Necropolis. Eight weeks ago, Harebrained Schemes committed to respond to feedback from critics and the community with a series of free updates and improvements. That work culminates in today’s free update, the NECROPOLIS BRUTAL EDITION.

- Version 1.1 contains the following additions, enhancements, and fixes for Necropolis.
- Added a new playable character, The Brute, with 7 unique armor sets including the fearsome Raider’s Garb which offers increased damage at some hefty costs.
- Added a new outdoor environment, The Black Forest, with 36 new modules!
- Added a new starting module to reduce the time needed to get back into the action.
- Added 7 more new enemies including the Bandit - watch it, he’ll steal your loot!
- Added 16 new weapons, with unique abilities such as the Arcane Shadow - a devastating maul that deals incredible amounts of damage, but its curse strips the player of most of their defenses, use at your own risk.
- Added new traps, the Necropolis wasn’t deadly enough so we added some spinning blades and even deadlier spike traps. The Black Forest has its own traps, too.
- Added 5 new consumable items (potions, scrolls, etc.) including the Multiplayer focused Resurrection scroll! All your fellow adventurers in danger and downed? Revive them from a safe distance!
- Added new loot! Recipes are now part of loot drops, you can find them throughout the Necropolis. Buying is now just one way to expand your potion and crafting potential!
- Improvements to blocking and shield bashing. Stamina costs for successful blocks has been reduced, as well as the threshold for shield breaks has been increased, meaning it will happen less often. Lastly, damage bleed through (in the event of shield break) has been lowered.
- General performance improvements

ssokolow: I use 7-zip because, when I set up the habit and the shell alias I use, I'd forgotten about split. (And an argument could still be made that 7-zip is more idiot-proof... especially if you might someday need to access the Linux installer on Windows for some reason.)
The problem with a split compressed archive over just splitting a large file is that you need all parts to recover the archive, and I find even TY media is prone to the usual DVD-R unreliability and short life.

[EDIT: of course you need all parts to recover a split file, but you can use alternative sources for parts, whereas for a self-generated archive you created the only copies of that data in existence, if you see what I mean]

I gave up on DVD-R a few years ago when the cost of 4TB drives started to approach the cost of good media, but before I did I made sure to use dvdisaster to generate sufficient ECC data (either filling out the DVD-R or, if there wasn't room, create separate ECC data and collect those on another DVD-R, itself with additional ECC data appended, and thoroughly indexed so I can find the ECC data for a disc if needed!).

Still, often enough I go to dig out a DVD-R (not necessarily an old one, maybe even TY media), and the damn thing is completely unreadable. Never bothered to figure out if any of those were due to user error or a dodgy burner.

Probably the Mac version had Mac-specific fixes performed on it. Just because the version numbers differ that doesn't always mean that one is less updated than the other :)

As for the gpg-4, because it's the 4th version of the GOG installer :)

Hmmm... I thought the game version was always the same throughout the different supported OSs (i.e. if a Linux-specific patch is released for a game, that game's version goes up by one small number for Windows and Mac as well), and that it was the job of the gog-versions to account for changes on particular OS builds.

But that's a new game, and the file has just been added. I also thought that newly added file always got 'gog-1' as its GOG-version, but I never really checked. So in this case I get that you had some issues with the Windows installer prior to release and this is the fourth iteration you generated?

The game version can change between OSes if there are issues specific to a given OS that get fixed.

As for the gog-4, there may have been other updates to game before release or we had to fix some issues with the offline installer.

DVD-R and DVD+R are different beasts. Basically, they cut corners on the ECC in the spec for -R to retain compatibility with some kind of older manufacturing equipment and then +R got it right.

I have burned over 3400 DVDs so far (and worn out multiple burners in the process) and, as far as I can tell, my age-related failures are still in the single digits and, as far as I can remember, pretty much exclusively on the DVD-Rs I burned back in high school when I didn't know any better.

I don't trust hard drives because of how much would be lost to a single failure and the horror stories about how they can go from functional to dead while disconnected and powered down. (With DVDs, you can replace the drive separately from the data layer and the failure characteristics of Taiyo Yuden discs with MID=YUDEN000/T02 are a known quantity for me.)

I'm worried by the fact that CMC bought Taiyo-Yuden from JVC though, so I'm going to have to start looking into alternatives that meet both my needs and /r/datahorder standards.

Gah, it's been so long I'd forgotten the whole DVD±R thing!

It was really very difficult to source good media in this country, just checked and my remaining stock is TYG03, which was probably the *only* option i could find at the time (and I used a specialist supplier). My most recent burner is an LG DVD±RW drive - again, availabilty and affordability of good hardware is a problem over here).

It's refreshing to know you've found a way to make optical media work well for you!

I don't trust spinning rust completely either (but backing up manually to a second set of drives to avoid replicating data loss works well enough for my budget), but in the past 30 years the only drives ever to fail on me were exclusively Seagate (barracuda *spit*, but for some reason Sun liked to ship systems with them), so I just avoid those... ;-) I'm happy with my Deathstars (heck, I even used to be happy with Maxtors). In fact I couldn't even find a DeskStar last time round upgrading, but found a 6TB UltraStar for not much more.

Also, my FreeBSD server uses ZFS, so even though I can't afford a system with ECC RAM, I can fairly easily detect data corruption and restore from backup copies (caveat: too easy to procrastinate manual backups).

CMC, oh yes, I remember those horror stories! (Even had the not-so-pleasurable experience first-hand.)

That's sad news (like how WD? now own HGST).
