I think one good thing to come out of the pandemic is that all the extroverts will suffer as they are forced to refrain from social contact.

tburger: BTW - how is the opinion in your country on virus in terms of economy?
In the part of Spain where I live, one half of the people lives from tourism. The other half lives from people who live from tourism. Our opinion? We're fucked!

The season would've started now (slowly). But instead of getting everything ready, we're in quarantine, ALL hotels are closed (or going to close at the end of the week) and the airport is closed for tourists (they're not allowed to come in). Some EU immigrants already said that they'll have to go back to their countries if they can't open their businesses soon and if there won't be any toursits. Some people already said they won't be able to open their business when quarantine is over, because people who were supposed to come here to work for them cancelled their flights and are looking for different jobs in other countries right now. Some attractions and clubs won't even open when there'll be heavy restrictions on how many people you'll be allowed to let in at the same time (which definitely will happen).

People here are slowly realizing that 2020 is over before it started. Ask anyone what they'll do and you'll get the same answer: "I don't know..." People here can't just look for another job. Everything depends on tourism. Even the supermarkets wil run into serious problems when all that people can afford will be rice and ketchup.

As I said... We're fucked! This is going to be one tough year until we (hopefully!) can start to earn money again in April 2021.

Themken: Food rationing :-(
Why? Crops and farm animals are not at risk and they are not unattended. Distribution goes on. The problem is in the cities, not in the countryside.
Nevada is officially shut down. All casinos will be closed by tomorrow - for at least 30 days. This is crazy. Never seen anything like this before.
It feels surreal. Like being stuck in some otherworldly dystopian reality. The irony being, I had predicted an attack by a rna based virus. Now, that it is happening, and I am a different person than I was then, it feels strange.

I live in the most populated city in my country, and it is also among the top 5 most populated cities in the world. In such a city that is swarming with people, we have 40 plus confirmed cases, until now. 3 people have died in my country.

These numbers may well be relatively smaller vis-a-vis the population but they are sufficent to induce panic, and lead to a lockdown.

Malls, movie theaters, pubs, and nightspots have been shut down. Gatherings of more than 4 people can provoke legal action. It is strangely peaceful like the calm before the storm.

There is no cure, and no knowledge about the long term implications. Just blood and the virus. Try and not get infected. All hands on deck. .we are stuck in a maelstrom.

apehater: who else has trouble to get their hands on toilet paper?
Luckily I had the insight to buy around 15 or so rolls before this got worse else I(and my family) likely only have enough for less than a week.....now one can't find any for love or money in many stores near where I live.

I hope things return to normal in time for the July/August season, and that domestic tourism will make up for the loss of international visitors, as it happened during some years of the previous economic crisis. Stay strong!

Why am I not surprised this got high rated at a game forum? I don't complain though, the mere thought makes me giggle with glee.
In the year 2020, toilet paper became the new currency worldwide. Except in China and maybe South Korea, they seem to handle the situation pretty well, considering it was pretty grim there.

They're kinda like bottle caps in Fallout now :P! I wonder what the value of Rice and Pasta will be.

Also, that goes out to anyone reading this. Don't trust scaremongering articles that say that millions or billions are/will be infected by this. Just do the necessary hygene precautions as laid out by the WHO and you will be fine.

This is nothing new. I don't have the research papers on hand because it was quite a long time ago (decades), but fairly sure that I've read predictions that another outbreak would've happened somewhere around 2018 and 2019, reading papers about SARS from 2007 and the papers that discuss the most recent H1N1 outbreak around 2010 or so. I'm no virologist however, just a hobby statistician however.

Not only that, but scientists did predict another outbreak with upmost certainty in 2017. It clearly was a simple matter of time for many scientists that SARS-Cov-2 would've happened again.

I've read about the virus having pretty much no NAb resistance though, which is a very good thing. Fairly sure that counter pandemic measurements (like homogenic vaccination) may happen during mid/late august or even earlier.

There is also analysis of SARS-CoV that I've been reading recently, perhaps its of interests to some. Its a bit of a scary read, but news of SARS-CoV-2 just about 1:1 similar to past research of SARS, which means we're pretty much dealing with SARS MK2 now (which is is, if you look at the virus from an outsiders perspective, it basically upgraded its way to infect people but the symtoms of covid-19 and SARS are very similar, here is another piece of data that complement this). Without fearmongering too much, I think its common sense to become ready for SARS MK3 within the next 5 to 15 years again after this outbreak is over, depending how much this pandemia will accelerate things globally in a negative way.

One major rule applies, the more people prepare when it comes to another more potent rise of SARS, the higher the chances to counter another pandemic outbreak quickly. Right now I do suspect that infections rise to be arouind 475.000 people maximum, but it is my own liberal estimation/guesswork. Its quite a high number, but nothing too scary, considering it accounts for everyone globally.

Beware "others". Stooges in my place, became universal news, by gathering at beachside Saturday nights by the HUNDREDS, around small bars. Ediots wouldn't behave and stay quarrantined, jeopardizing even those who do and venture outside only for business and first needs (getting food and basics). American press covered this new "epidemy", which is much more lethal than covid-19; its name is stupidity. And not only Saturdays. They daily defy the measures for everyone, strolling outside casually in LARGE gatherings and close to each other; to the point that civilian police is now on the lookout, not for arrests, but for shooing them from public spots.

Worst of all, university student sluts, which here are MANY, are even now frantically searching (dating sites/apps, tabloid ads) for sugar-daddies and quickies for 80-120 bucks, with various unchecked riff-raff who happen to be loaded... Where and when even kissing somebody on cheeks and shaking hands is strictly prohibited.

Well, i myself got a bunch of games to play on GOG and don't go outside, unless it cannot be helped. I wouldn't do crazy stuff even if they paid me to. I pity those protozoa minded apes. At least, there is always that infamous natural selection, so i do not particularly worry.

The only thing we know for sure is that there is a pastability that the price will rice. I don't think it's it's much to invest in though, we will be pasta this soon enough. You don't want to sit with too much on your hands of something that's not worth a single penne.

So why is the media announcing EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN person who tests positive with this, and yet no numbers on people with the Flu or other infectious diseases? In a place with over 8.5 million, we have 60 cases locally. SIXTY! And people are losing their minds!

I get what you mean, but you have to understand that this is no "ordrinary" pandemic. With some bad luck we may have the next H1N1 from a 100 years ago in our hands in terms of how proficient covid is happening. Luckly we're only one step away from that so there is still "hope". SARS-CoV-2 primary danger is misinformation and panic, so the least we can do online is to create a clam atmosphere.

There is another factor that I've noticed and that is stupidity, mostly in form of "its just the flu bro", with people not caring about it. Statistically, Covid-19 is about 25 times more lethal, with statistics also indicating that deaths are "calming down", so to speak. Still, there is the need to worry about a possible increase in lethality due to this type of Coronavirus unstable nature (as seen with the previous SARS outbreak). If I would be in the shoes of "the media", I would try to be less alarming but still inform about the importance of basic hygene doctrines in the wake of such a pandemic.

EDIT: I'm not implying that people on here say these dumb things but its the notion outside the internet, where people still want to throw parties and concerts, stuff like that.

At least something good came from this pandemic. Eurovision Song Contest is canceled, I need to celebrate with a shot of whiskey later this evening.
