Makotolia: Yeah...now that I think about it, indeed, the phone calls is a nice touch to give players a “real life” feeling, and true, it’s a game about the atmosphere and has done it well. Maybe I was just so eager to finish it quickly since I also have Syberia 2 in my backlog, that I got frustrated more quickly than usual.
Syberia 2 is a direct sequel - meaning the story of Syberia 1 simply continues and concludes here. So you could rather say that those two are more or less like one bigger game though the second is a little bit fifferent than the first one.

Makotolia: Oh, I just think about a particular thing that confuses me: at the beginning, the gate to the catacomb was closed, and IIRC, there was a hint that it would reopen one day later or so. But somehow that gate opened after I fiddled around a bit, but I just never bothered to check it again since I didn’t notice any hint that it just got opened. What did I miss?
Not quite sure which gate you are referring to. I just looked the first gate up and Kate is saying "There's something missing" - for the the actual catacomb door she says "I cannot go that way" (which she could not as long as it was closed). For the catacomb door to be opened you need to play the organ.

It’s probably the first gate that blocks Kate. The right word is probably “cemetery” rather than “catacomb”-my vocabulary is just too limited for choosing the accurate words sometimes...anyway, IIRC there was info about that gate’s being closed until the mourning for Anna is over, but I don’t seem to remember seeing hints about any mechanics which opens the gate nor any clue that a day has passed. I didn’t play it continuously though, maybe I just missed something.
I would like to request hitman Absolution if it is still available.

NVM.....I did not spot the previous post requesting it. Sorry.

There is the gate at the church. When Kate is trying to open this one right at the beginning (before visiting the attorney) she says "It's locked - I come back when the funeral is over". This only means that you will have to do other things in town before coming back to this one. After visiting the attorney the gate is open. This way the game tries to prevent that you have too many open locations at once.

Oh, now I guess I see where I may have made a mistake. There is a baker who refuses to do business, stating something like “we are mourning for Lady Anna today, so come back tomorrow”. I took this, combined with what Kate says about the gate, as a hint that the gate won’t open until the second day...

Ha, no. After the baker told you to come back tomorrow Kate tells the baker that she won't be here tomorrow anymore ... meaning - the baker does not have anything interesting to say - he just wants to make clear why the streets are so empty :)

But I just took that as either I don’t really have to go pass the gate for the game to progress, or at least not before some events changing the date. Well, maybe this time I’m the one with the moon logic XD

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts and clarification, I may pick it up again some time ;)

Makotolia: Talk about Syberia, maybe you guys would care to enlighten me about why the first 2 are good? I dropped the first one months ago, mainly because it plays somewhat too slow for me. The walking/running seems to take forever (well, if I'm better at solving the puzzles then less backtracking would probably lighten this feeling though;), and I just somehow got frequently lost (maybe it's the language requirement? Since it does offer a lot to read. I'm not a native English reader after all). I tried to love it, but instead I dropped it after I had left the first town.

I'm definitely not saying it's a bad game though. While not being a hardcore P&K AVG fan, there are P&K games that I do enjoy, and that's why I hope I can get more out of this loved series by listening to your opinions.
I would say it is all thanks to the wonderful backgrounds, but I do not mean that they are beautifully done graphical(Yes, they are ). What I mean that they are mixture of mysterious Verne's science fiction and Romanticism' s nostalgia.
If it is possible I would nominate SirEyeball for Hitman: Absolution

It's a game where it divides people: either you love it or you hate it. It's sort of a niche. Both its strength and its weakness is that the game is designed very much like a book. In a book, you'd read about the sweeping environments, the crunching of the snow, the singing of the birds, etc. In the game, it shows you all this visually - and forces you to take it in by making you walk slowly, giving it to you via visuals rather than words (the same issue happens if you watch a movie directed by an author, like Coma from Michael Crichton or Maximum Overdrive from Stephen King). A lot of the appeal is based off the characters and your attachment to them. If you find them charming and memorable in an Alice-in-Wonderland sort of way, you'll form an attachment and love it (I mean, Syberia is the only game I can think of that actually lets you go back and say goodbye to people you meet before leaving an area). If they don't hold that kind of charm for you and you aren't taken in by the atmosphere, you'll find it a slow drag that has too much backtracking.
