ssokolow: 1. Report them to the Kickstarter and the Better Business Bureau (as mentioned, I wrote a guide)
Speaking of which, did you receive any response from either concerning your complaint?

Indy devs can be just as stupid as big AAA companies. Which is sad, really.
When the indie companies got their first chance (thanks to Kickstarter) many thought that they would bring more sanity and balance to the gaming world. Unfortunately some have proven to be as greedy and narrow-minded as the "big ones".
Fortunately most indie devs don't see things this way.

As bizarre as this may sound I think that there's a possibility that things turn upside down. As time passes we'll probably see big companies allowing their games to become drm-free, while younger companies will want to have more online control over their games.

tapeworm00: I was incredibly excited for this game... till now. This is very disappointing, it's like the studio barely knows how piracy works, or why people do it.
Well, they have blame somebody and it's not as if they would blame Steam for having poor protection.

I conversed with Kickstarter but I'm not sure what status they currently consider things to be in.

As for the BBB, my complaint is listed as waiting for a response from Stoic.

Reminds me of when King Xerxes, in an apparently characteristic fit of pique, sentenced the Hellespontos strait to 300 lashes and being branded with irons for destroying his pontoon bridges.

kokosabre: Well.. 30mins after release there are already torrents of the game... [...]
Well then, looks like things are going according to plan for Stoic.
I could understand if Stoic didn't want to bother with GOG because of low sales here, but piracy? :-P

I suspect that low sales isn't really an issue. I even bought the game when it was last on promotion here (last March if I'm not mistaken). I'm really enjoying the game.

I fear I'm gonna have to pirate Banner Saga 2 now (no way I'm gonna buy it on Steam) :P

You could just not play it?
You don't HAVE to pirate anything.

You know what I mean.
Besides I have enough games as it is to keep me interested.

And I don't want to delve into the piracy issue further. Plenty of stuff as already been said about the issue.
But I'll write one thing: GOG and its DRM-free policy was the one thing that stopped my "piracy days" since I didn't want to install Steam on my PC.

If a publisher/developper sees me as an honest customer, then I'll be an honest customer.
If a publisher/dev. sees me as potential pirate, then I'll act as a pirate.

Meanwhile, I suggest you read this article, friend. You may or may not agree with the points raised by the author, but many of the stories he shares here were also part of my own history while growing up. Hence my lack of issues with "piracy".

Don't worry I get it, I just took issue with the phrasing. :P
I'll read it.
I miss my days as a pirate. Oh, how the high seas call to me...
Oh wait, you guys aren't talking about those pirates. My bad.

The funny thing is, though I take pride in never pirating anything (I own over 3200 games, over 1000 books, etc. Why would I need to?), I'm agonizing over it in this case, because they tricked me out of $50 on the impression that I'd get non-worthless keys for TBS2 and TBS3.

Understandable. But I also feel that piracy isn't the proper response here. It just gives them incentive to go more draconian down the road. I'd just say 'Fuck You' to anything Stoic is involved in from now on until and unless they come to their senses. Money talks, and all that rot.

*nod* Intellectually, I know they're not worth losing the moral high ground. That's why, so far, my approach has been to...

1. Not redeem the Humble "carrier key" for the Steam keys at the risk that, some day, they may release a DRM-free copy through Humble and my key may have expired.
2. Continue waiting for a Better Business Bureau response
3. Continue looking for ways to drag their name through the mud
4. Hype myself up about playing more Undertale and buying Stardew Valley (first digital download I'll ever pay full price for) as soon as my degree project is finished. (Plus, the marathon of King's Quest, Quest for Glory, Quest for Infamy, etc. that I already had planned)

See? There are always good reasons not to pirate. Well done, sir, well done! :)
