Hey all,

I went through an experience yesterday where for part of the afternoon, I had no internet. LE GASP! you say. OH NOES you follow up with.

Well, I use steam to keep in contact with my friends, and I use Galaxy to play pc games that are offline if at all possible. Because I was so indoctrinated with needing an online connection, I forgot for about a half hour that I could play my GOG games through Galaxy.

As I was sitting on hold, again, waiting for my ISP to give me a new account because they cancelled my old account, BECAUSE I cancelled all services but internet, I fired up Galaxy and played some Witcher 3. I realized just how reliant we are on the internet, and I thought about the 90's when I was a teen, and what it'd be like to be "off the grid" in the 2010's.

I'm grateful for the little things, and I know we bust the hell out of GOG's balls all the time, but still. This is one of very few places where you can play your single player games without an internet connection, without also having to set a client to an offline mode.

Thanks, GOG.
Unless you want to play Gwent of course, or absolver, goblins inc...
That's basically why I don't regret buying a PS4 last year. My then internet provider (fucking o2) couldn't even get the machine online for months, and I still got to play some incredible games for hundreds (!) of hours right out of the box.

And although I loathe Galaxy, as of right now we still have the option for DRM free exe files here on GOG. Which ensures my continued support despite some definite failings.

Well, they're the absolute lowest possible bar in Germany, particularly concerning their service hotlines. I've tried half a dozen times to reach these fucks, and always spent between 45 and 80 minutes on hold, sometimes they just plain threw me out after that, sometimes they were pretty fucking unable and unwilling to help. And they never, never, never call you back. :|

So I left their service in the dust, then got a friend to make the same move away from o2. Working on more. :)

Absolver is playable offline... so is Goblins Inc (using the single player offline version). So how about we stop with the false info shall we.
And so the gog defenders and drm apologists arise, I will not say anything further other than for anyone interested to read the reviews, don't take my word for it.
Haha, I thought this would be a thread about appreciating something in RL, out there in the world, that's not dependent on computers and electricity or something, but yeah, being able to play games offline is nice, too. :D

Although, not to split hairs but it seems you did still use GOG's client to play your game offline anyway, and if you're generally fine with using other online clients, setting them to offline isn't such a big deal either. I do prefer offline installers myself, but it's not as if outside of GOG you can't ever play any of your single player games offline.

You can do that with Steam you know. Not for every game but a large number of them.

I hate to say it, but if you read the reviews, he's got a point.

Ha, didn't know they did physical cards of it. Maybe for the future, at the moment I am buying world of Warcraft tcg cards and warhammer invasion currently, though just got gloomhaven so likely all time will go into that.

True, but my internet just suddenly got switched off, so I couldn't set any online clients to offline mode.

Also, I am grateful for a ton of stuff IRL, but I don't like posting my personal life on here.

For Steam, I think it would have been enough to simply close and restart the client. If you try to launch it without an internet connection available, it will ask if you'd like to start in offline mode. Don't know how it works for UPlay, Origin etc.

Not a fan of additional client software myself, but Steam's offline mode seems to work well enough.
