Yes it does; no it isn't. A brand new DVD doesn't have the same type of DRM built-in where the player won't play it without additional updates. I don't agree with DVDs having copy protection either, mind you, but there is a difference between playing a newly released movie on DVD versus playing it on Blu-Ray. The DVD is basically "put the disc in and play", the Blu-Ray is not without your device being constantly up-to-date.
Effectively, this has gotten me to stop buying newly released movies. I'm sick of having to download new updates to my primary Blu-Ray player every time I want to watch a newly released Blu-Ray. That doesn't mean I will p*rate either. I will just be content with my collection as it is. These genius studios are literally losing a customer, because of their insistence on draconian DRM that I can't be bothered to deal with.
The Criterion Collection films alone prove that those things are wholly unnecessary. From what I have seen, most take you right to the main menu when you load it in. No weird fearmongering and threatening the customer about "digital th*ft", no previews that have to be skipped one-by-one since they grayed out the menu option, no bs.
