Please though; no bonsai's or cacti for fear of the damage done to the tree or themselves respectively :p

madeaj: I was talking to one of those above average drivers (AAD). He was complaining about having to fight in court the multiple driving and parking violations he has amassed. Of course he had an excuse for each one which is why he is spending hundreds (thousands?) of dollars on a lawyer (who is probably paying off his student loan with AADs). He actually told me he was an excellent driver, and even though he doesn't have a license he offered to take me for a ride to prove it. 8-0
Sounds about right... "Okay, wait here while I go get my crash helmet."

Stilton: I envy you being what and where you are - life on the road (not the tramp kind ;)) has always had a 'real' appeal to me, despite the fact I live in the UK which is about the size of some of the trailers you pull and can't drive anything bigger than a modestly sized lawnmower. But there's something about the simplicity of you, your truck and where you're going that I like. Its bound to have its downsides, some of which you have mentioned, but being on the move has a definite emotive pull.

xjay73: This is actually my second career. After getting a master's degree in math, I taught for 11 years, but I gave it up because I got tired of dealing with parents who would take no responsibility for their kids' behavior and administrators who wouldn't stand up to these same parents when they would complain about their kids' failing grades.

I've been driving a truck for about 7 1/2 years now and I love it. With the exception of the occasional "stupid people" (more on that below), this really is the least stressful job I've had in my life. I keep telling people that one day I suppose I'll have to find a real job again. :-) I'm not sure if I would enjoy it as much as a job in the UK... America certainly has its problems, but it also has miles and miles of wide-open spaces and roads going through them.

jackster79: Also, each game has its own forum here on GOG, so if you like applying modding / additional patching / etc. to games you acquire here and such things exist for the game in question chances are there is a sticky at the beginning of each of those forums.

Anyways, you're quite welcome! Hope you enjoy whichever game you pick! :-)

xjay73: Yeah, I noticed that as I bought games during this sale, the list of forums on the left side got longer and longer. I haven't checked any of them out yet, but I definitely will!

avatar
CarrionCrow: Okay, that's cool. Haven't heard of that being available. Take full advantage and gear up.
Also, I'll tell you what I tell people I know in similar lines of work - Take care, be safe, and watch out for stupid people.

xjay73: It's actually part of the service called IdleAir. It's a unit that fits in the passenger-side window of the truck that provides, among other things, climate control for an hourly rate, so I don't have to idle the truck to keep comfortable, and the rate is about half what it would cost me in burned up diesel fuel. It also gives access to some network TV and some other things, and internet for an additional small fee. I don't use it often, mainly because it's only at a handful of truck stops nationwide, but it's a must in the deep South in the middle of summer.

As far as "stupid people": Not long ago, a firm conducted a survey of American drivers and asked them to rate their driving ability as average, above average, or below average. Over 90% of the respondents said "above average."

Well, we Americans always have been a bit proud of ourselves, haven't we? :D I have hours and hours of dash-cam footage from my truck to support my conjecture that only about 20% of American drivers know what a turn signal is and how to use it properly, just as a quick counterexample.

So I'll finish by telling you what I tell other people who tell me to "be safe": Thank you, and don't be one of those stupid people. :)
No worries there. Out of anything that might go sideways, me harming someone with a vehicle is pretty far down the list of possibility. =)
As usual I'm a tad late, but I'd be remiss not to give a grateful shoutout to the amazing crew who managed this thread and, indeed, the Insomnia itself. Many lists were made, but not merely of what had come and gone or was left. No, there were lists of what folks wanted, what they'd missed, what they'd snagged or had extras. There was a united concerted effort to make the maximum number of people happy, in a very sleep-deprived zombie-shambling sort of happy way ;)

So, a big THANK YOU, in no particular order and in no way exhaustively, to
Sinistar, Pidgeot, Grargar, foxworks, Tarnicus, DreadMoth, trentonlf, KyleCS, HypersomniacLive, momo, vulchor, and the many many other brave Insomniacs.

Your watch is done. Sleep now :P

The Dunning–Kruger effect strikes again.

That.

I don't put much stock in other driver's turn signal because even when they use it as they often use it too early (there is an intersection before where they want to get off) or too late (they start turning, then signal). I use their speed and vehicle positioning primarily and the turn signal (if it's here) as confirmation if it agrees with it.
Amazing, so many drivers here. I have never had a driving license ;-) And now it's too late for that, because after playing several installations of GTA, I would probably kill a lot of people.

Anyway is Euro Trucker 2 any good?

If you are talking about Euro Truck Simulator 2 then I would say that yes, it's pretty good.

Since you don't have a drivers license yet (it's never too late) here's a great video on how to play the game:

I think its great that you chose to follow your principles and opted for something that you clearly find more rewarding. Dealing with disruptive kids and their equally unreachable parents must feel like banging your head against a wall when the best course of action would be to bang theirs' against it instead.

A masters in math must be unusual compared to the standard type of education a trucker has (maybe I'm being unfair, I doubt if 'Ice Road Truckers' paints an accurate picture of what all truckers are like). I expect there are quite a few who, like yourself, have switched from a career that made them feel trapped or disappointed and are glad they had the courage to move.

Having all that power under your right foot must feel good - I take it the truck is yours, what kind is it?

Hello,

I'm glad to see that this awesome thread is still alive :)

Thank you all for being so friendly, helpful and gentle, even to new members like me!
This community is so great and it's a pleasure being here :)

Insomnia Sale was an interesting and cool experience, although I'm still really tired lol

Hope there are other threads if this one is finished for talking with these people once again, this forum is new to me and I'm still exploring it :)
What the hell are you people still doing in here? I just came back to look for my pants and the DJ is still spinning on a clock radio he found in the hall!
