Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

rodrolliv: Has it been hinted that there will be another edition of the promo this year? I have not followed GOG's posts, twits or whatever they use to spill the beans.
No. The last Insomnia (the Spring one) was advertised, so I don't know what to think.

None at all that I've seen. Nothing on Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. But with the response it's received twice now, the level of enthusiasm it causes not just here but all over the internet, and the sheer number of sales it generates, would they really want to shelve it when it's already something that provides an experience no competitor is able to touch?

truhlik: Someone else also think that tomorrow is The Day?

Niggles: ImASinistar seemed to think maybe on a Wednesday possibly (was it so last time?)
Just checked, and yes, it was on a Wednesday last year.

Niggles: Played neither game. Didnt they have strong single player campaigns however?.
X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter was primarily focused on multiplayer and didn't have much to offer in terms of single-player content. Until the release of the Balance of Power addon, that is. So it might not be a bad idea to use Galaxy for it.

If it goes live on its anniversary, Nov 13, hints may be coming starting today.

I will be devastated if No-Hints = No-Insomnia-Promo.
I am still hopeful that we will be getting Insomnia, but part of me suspects GOG won't do it just because it's what we expect them to do. We agitated like crazy for the second Insomnia and they granted that wish, but doing so again might feel to them like they are ceding control to the fans. They may also just not want to repeat themselves. Though they do anyway, in more subtle ways. For example, the Mutator promo was a retooling of the Pots Of Gold promo. And the formats of the Summer/Winter sales follow a somewhat standard pattern as well, so there's really no reason that Insomnia would have to be different just for difference sake.

So basically I have no clue what GOG is going to do. I can see the possible outcomes from every angle.
Insomnia. Is. Coming. Period.
This.
Seems kind of silly, to have a sale that became an Event, twice, and just ignore it thereafter. Most businesses chase that kind of thing.

Could you imagine if stores in the US said, "Well, Black Friday, it did real good the first couple of times, but let's not do that anymore." I think that's one of the reasons so many people get pissed at Thanksgiving early sales. Not because they care about the holiday, but because it changes the "Event" Black Friday has become.

You make a good point. If it was just another sale, that'd be one thing. But given how much publicity and excitement there is whenever Insomnia happens, not just here but all over the internet, it does seem counterproductive to stop doing what has become an actual event. Would be willing to bet that nothing else generates as much buzz aside from the summer and end of the year sales. Also, noone else does anything like it, so the uniqueness of it is something else to consider.

Well stated. Perhaps this is how things are viewed at GOG then. After all, it would be short-sighted to give up on a phenomenon that has been such a success, even if a contentious one at times.
I'll probably miss most of this if it were to be before December, as I'm on vacation until then and my connection varies from hotel to hotel. And besides I'm online only a couple of minutes daily. .

That would be me!

You're absolutely right! And if they do ignore this sale format, it may even be picked up by some other digital distributors. Now we wouldn't want that to happen, would we? *Eyeing GOG in a menacing way*

I imagine I have made it fairly clear that I would LOVE another Insomnia.

That said, there's this little bit from the article that CarrionCrow linked.

"We want to keep some magic," Rambourg said. "When you make something crazy like that regular, you kill some magic. We should use it from time to time, and that's it."

Now I think you guys make a lot of sense here in the most recent posts. But it doesn't seem inevitable.

That part made me cringe a bit as well. But doing something for 5 days once every 6 months might not be seen as going back to the same well endlessly.
As Sinistar mentioned, GOG had a Pot of Gold sale and then a Mutator sale within a few months' time and they were the same concept with a minor variation. If that's viable, I have a bit of trouble seeing why doing Insomnia again would be a bad thing. They make a lot of money, get a lot of press, and we get good deals combined with the overall experience.
