Please, I'm really not trying to start a political discussion. I swear. I am just curious about a "feature" that used to be in Gothic, and now I'm not seeing and am just curious about whether it was intentionally removed or whether the fact I'm using a 3dfx wraparound may be the issue. Can we keep it to just that? I just didn't quite know how to title the thread.

Back "in the day" when I played this, I remember, and I'm quite sure I'm remembering this correctly although I can never say I'm 100% sure because my memory isn't as reliable as it used to be, that when you smoked weed, there was an in-game "high" effect.

I'm not sure how to describe it, but I remember it after smoking a joint you experienced this "high" effect visually, with the screen image becoming, I dunno how to describe it so I'll just say flaky. And it wasn't some graphical glitch, you could easily tell it was trying to simulate a "high" effect somehow visually and it happened whenever you smoked a joint.

This time I'm seeing no such effect. I am seeing in one case my mana increased by 2 (from 5 to 7... yay) and then one also gave me 10 points of experience. But no visual high effect. Did they maybe patch out the high effect and replace it with the other "rewards"? Perhaps those rewards were there last time too, but I swear I do remember seeing the high effect whenever I smoked a joint. I used to show it visitors who visited me when I was playing it.

I think the effect was patched out due to the issues with 3dfx wrappers (in one of the fan patches). but I faintly remember it myself too, but im old too so I barely remember.

man I need to play gothic 1 and 2 again.

Your post got me thinking about the bump mapping issue in Republic Commando on newer graphics cards.
I'm pretty sure Gothic is PC exclusive. Also, it can barely run on my PC and it has janky ass controls, so I put it off.

EDIT: Turns out it's on Switch now. It fell out of the PC crowd in fact.

In this context, PC means politically correct. You're right about it being PC exclusive though, except I think Gothic 4 got a release on the Xbox 360.

Wait... there's a Gothic 4?

EDIT: NM, I guess Arcania is Gothic 4. So hard to keep up. There are almost basically two Gothic 3's (developed by different developers... though both were published by JoWood. Arcania is actually Gothic 4....

My head feels like I just smoked some swampweed for real.

Arcania: Gothic 4 But Not Really. Just booted up Gothic again and the performance on my PC is still trash even on "high performance" settings, which either means newer machines really don't like it or it was always poorly optimized.

Yeah, it's not a very good Gothic game though. I think it's called Arcania or something similar, with Gothic 4 being the subtitle.
You know, now that I've thought more about it, it might have Gothic 2 that had that "high" effect. Maybe Gothic 1 never did.

That's what I'm doing. I just have to experience them one more time before my time is up here. Such great games. I mean I'm playing Gothic 1 right now and I'm blown away by just about everything in this game and the thought that it was made over 2o years ago. Morrowind gets all the credit for revolutionizing RPG's from the 90's to the new century, but a lot of Morrowind's concepts were actually in Gothic 1 first.
