darkangelz: Took them almost 3 weeks, but got a reply about drm free, almost copy past to one posted above:

"Hello Darkangel,
Thank you very much for your message.
We are currently looking into the possibilities of releasing a DRM free version.
Should a DRM free version be confirmed we will post an update to the page so please stay tuned.
Best regards,
Oscar&
The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Team"

One can hope 10 days is enough for them to come to a decision about drm free.
avatar
Tekkaman-James: In the hopes of receiving further clarification, I replied to the message I received and asked why the response was so different from the one SCPM received three weeks ago. This is their uplifting response:

At the beginning of the Kickstarter there were originally no plans for a DRM free version, however with so many fans requesting a DRM free version Ys Net has decided to look into the situation.

Currently whether there will be a DRM free version or not, is still undecided. Should a DRM free version be decided upon, there will be an announcement in the updates.

Thank you again for your support and we please ask you to be patient in this matter.

Best regards,

Oscar&
The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Team

Tekkaman-James: I am so glad I decided to send that message because this response is awesome. It's one thing to make assumptions and it's another to have the concrete facts on the matter. I am glad that the dev team have heard our cries. I just hope they are able to announce the great news before the end of the campaign. Fingers crossed!

NVash: Question, people are speaking of him continuing funding through some option with people donating every month. Would him being able to get the 11mill through that actually matter?
avatar
Tekkaman-James: When a developer initiates a "Slacker Backer" program, it can go either way. I've seen campaigns where devs have used this system to reach further stretch goals, but I've also seen ones that simply use it as a way to pad their budget for the features they already achieved. Knowing how Suzuki-san wants this game to be as big as possible, he definitely could use a system like this to reach any unattained goals. Whether or not he will is yet to be seen.
avatar
tfishell: Finally got my response too, basically what everyone has has (finally) gotten:

"Thank you very much for your messages. (Our) mailbox is getting a lot of use these days so sometimes it takes a while to reply, our apologies. We are currenlty still looking into DRM-free possibilities and have not decided on a PC vendor yet. Once these things are decided we will post an update to the page , so stay tuned. We will forward your request to use GOG to Yu Suzuki and the Ys net team. Best regards, Oscar & The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Team"

I don't have a lot of hope but it's important we make our voices heard. :) EDIT: Actually, two posts above does give me a bit of hope.
How are you all sending these messages? Are you backers ATM? I'd like to send a message asking about a possible Mac release. I doubt it'll happen but it can't hurt to ask.
You can send direct messages without backing at all (at the very bottom of the KS).

If you back U$ 5 you can post comments and participate in surveys (one so far).

(Could you maybe edit your post so there isn't a "wall of text"? ;) Thank you)

I'm not a backer but on the Kickstarter page there's a "Contact Me" link that let's you message on Kickstarter. (You do have to be signed up for Kickstarter, though.)
Summary of the latest Twitter Q&A with Yu Suzuki (still no news about a DRM free version)

Originally I had no idea how to do that. I always feared I'd delete the wrong text. I hope I did it properly here.

Also thank you for the info as well. I sent them a message earlier but it's doubtful I'll get an answer.

Nothing much there. Hopefully he'll bring the news quick, fast and in a hurry. What are we down to now? Five days? And they still haven't hit 5mill? He's really not giving many a chance here. He can keep on messing around if he wants but I feel like people have bills to pay. Shenmue III is not a priority as opposed to a car note or rent. Right now the money could be there for some but who knows if it'll be there in five days? Why is he taking his time?

Check out some of these quotes from the Kickstarter.

The Real Dante

@ tristan it could have happened if IGN didn't create that initial backlash over Sony involvement. It could have happened if Sega would have announced a HD collection in time. It could have happened if the entire fanbase would have helped. there were pettions with near 500 000 people during the years. We now have 10% of does people backing this. Where is everyone else? Are they waiting for the end of the campaign? Are they on that self entitled camp that doesn't support the KS because they feel entitled to ask Sony to fund this even doe it's not their game, even doe it was always presented as a finantial risk? Are they the ones saying that they feel betrayed for having to pay for the production of the game (even doe you get the game and other stuff from your pledges) when they keeped the game alive all this years (and now that they can help save it they are not backing it cause they have to pay)? I think if there was not such a division we would be near the 10 million mark already, but there is a lot of people that want the game, but expect Sony to take the risk or others for them and are not able to spare 29$ to help. :/ When this campaign started I was so happy to see so much people with the same pation i did for Shenmue but at the same time so sad to see how self entitled some gamers are and how they say they love the franchise, how long they waited for the game but they won't pay 29$ to help it be saved and help us make the game as good as it can be. And I bet does will be the same people that will complain in the end if the game isn't bigger and better then Shenmue 2. .

Everybody wants to complain about Sony but I doubt that's the issue. The issue is the lack of Remasters, the vagueness as to how this game is being released and really crappy tiers. Still not one of those tiers calls out to me except for the soundtrack and game. I couldn't careless about anything else and many others might feel the same. Not only that why does he keep dropping high priced tiers and nothing for the people who are donating less than $100? I'm glad this person noticed that the lack of Remasters is one of the problems but it's obvious that just Shenmue III alone wasn't enough to appeal to most of the fanbase.

Bluedog600

They should've just kept it in Japanese with various language subtitles. The rest of our money should've gone into the fighting system in perspective systems and expansion.every Shenmue fan wants to play the game for the story not for the language.Core gameplay mechanics is where the rest of the money should go

This is brilliant. Japanese and various other subs. We don't need the other voice-overs anyway. Everyone hyped up Corey Marshall but honestly I think he sucked. He wasn't even an enjoyable campy kind of sucky either. The man made Ryo boring, annoying, downright unlikable and many times I put the game down because of him.

Yu has been very vague on a bunch of issues some i understand but we do not even know if the pc version has drm or not and what platform will deliver the digital version. So i assume no paypal and expect drm unless we are told other wise.

And I think this here is the issue that is holding this campaign back. No Paypal. No one knows about DRM. Remasters? Yes, no, maybe? No one knows any legit answers so he's not going to get the money he wants.

Recently I stumbled across a Kickstarter where they had a demo video, HQ concept art and they even had a downloadable demo of the game for PC, Mac and Linux. I downloaded the game and it was decent but I wanted to know more. I messaged them asking if there was DRM on the game. They messaged me three days later saying there was not. I immediately threw money at them. I messaged Yu close to a week ago. I understand people behind his campaign might be busy but it seems like everything has been done wrong from the jump. They make one step forward and take two steps back whenever they can.

At this point Yu is holding himself and his campaign back. I'm glad he's considering DLC later on down the road because that's probably the easiest and best way to finish this series. He can release new physical versions later on down the road when the entire story is finished.

JLH: that's why I never bothered with the xbox version when it came out. although I like the dubbing in Shenmue I heard that loading and slowdown (although dc Shenmue 2 had plenty of slowdown) were worse on xbox. I figured why buy an inferior version of the game? but I did recently pick up the xbox version just to have the Shenmue 1 movie with it. i found a decent deal. not a great deal since the prices of these games have tripled with Shenmue3's announcement.

i couldn't get rid of my pal Shenmue 2. now that I'm looking at prices on ebay I'm glad i kept it sheesh...worse than xbox version.
I play the xbox one on 360, or did from time to time. I use the cheats on the gambling games, as I played through 1 & 2 without ever thinking of the trick to just shut the system off when you lose and save when you hit.

I can't believe that passed by me. I don't think I handled electronics like that around the time of the DC though.
There was a live stream for japanese fans yesterday which was translated a bit already.

DRM not even mentioned once, yet again. Impressive. :(

Haha, looks like their "we're looking into it" is an attempt to lure DRM-free people to back it.

I'll wait for the game in a dollar bundle.

I always wanted to play a Shenmue game, but I won't part with my money blindfolded. They'll have to choose between my money or DRM.
I'll wait and see how this unfolds.
Are there any more interviews or anything like that planned? There are but three days left.
Supposedly a new trailer is coming but who knows. A lot of people will pledge in the last 2 to 3 days. So we will definately see a push. I think we will break the Bloodstained record. It is a fantastic result and I am happy that Shenmue III is happening even though there was more potential. We still dont know if there will be a DRM free version but I loved Shenmue and always said I would give a lot of money to be able to experience the rest of this story. For me it is the best creation of all kinds of entertainment ever made. I love this series and would create a Steam account to experience it. I totally understand that many people will not give their money because of the mismanagement and miscommunication.

Here is a new game snippet in pre-alpha build. It`s gonna be just as magical as part 1 +2!
I would take the game even now in this state, but by 2017 this will be breathtaking!

Please support the kickstarter campaign which very much determines the possible quality and scope of the game. It now only lasts for 67 hours!

No. Without a DRM-free version, this kickstarter campaign is textbook affinity fraud.

The basic idea of kickstarter is that you get all the money you need upfront, and then your project's future is allegedly secure. Kickstarter games don't need DRM, especially not for backers' copies, because their development has been allegedly paid in full upfront. This is what Shenmue would do if they actually needed people's money for the game and if the scope of the game actually, as they claim, relied on the money collected.

The presence of DRM leads me to conclude Sony bankrolls them, and DRM is meant to secure Sony's investment. In this case, the campaign as it is presented is a blatant con. Hell, the kickstarter can't even be used to gauge customer interest ("please give us money and Sony will match your donation 20:1"), because customer interest for a given finished product primarily depends on an advertising campaign, and Sony can't help but know anything they will implement in a concerted way would blow grassroots efforts out of the water.

THIS. IS. A. SCAM. Don't shill for scams. Kthx.
I completely agree with Starmaker.
Also, people should really start to understand that Kickstarter exist (or existed?) to allow a project to come to be when it wouldn't have any other chance to be realized, not for very early pre-order campaigns.

When you are backing a project, you are not (it would be more correct to say that you were not, as lately the tides seem to have turned) buying a product or investing in it, but donating money at your own expense and risk towards projects without any major publisher's support.
What does Shenmue 3 have to do with all this?
