I wondered, but I couldn't be bothered to look up the replacement code; at any rate, I don't remember it actually just dropping an entire section of the link as a result of the special character -- though that may have more to do with my memory. :P

100 Years of independence? Hm, correct me if I`m wrong, but wasn`t Poland under the rule of Russia until the end of the USSR in the 90s?

And Japan is still garrisoned by US troops and has restrictions imposed on developing its own military forces. Still an independent country on the world map though, as socialist Poland was.

Well, strictly spaking this is 100th anniversary of regaining Independence. The western part of Poland was occupied by Germany and the easter part by USSR between 1939 and 1945. The soviet soldiers did not leave Poland after WW II. They stayed there until 1991. That was against the will of the vast majority of Polish people. However, Poland as a country was recognized by international community as a country. That was not a case for 123 years before 1918.
