Yeshu: How is it DRM?

How exacly is this DRM? GWENT is a multiplayer only game like an MMO or many other F2P games, where you need to log in to the game to play it.

nightcraw1er.488: Can you play the game without logging onto a third party sever, no, then that is DRM. In fact is the holy grail of all drm zealots, a world where you have nothing, just an access to a sever they control. Hence streaming, office online etc. If you don't have control you have nothing.
"Here is my specific definition of what I think DRM is! Shut up I'm right!"

Enebias: People, please, don't say absurdities. This has nothing to do with DRM, no matter how you look at it.

Still, microtransactions have arrived to GOG, and this is very, very sad.
avatar
ZFR: Agreed.

Seriously, why did CDP feel they have to release GWENT through GOG?

Why not create a new daughter company that would handle GWENT, and any future MMORPGs or multiplayer only games? And make them Galaxy compatible. Non of this would have been a problem.
Ether way they would need to create somekind of connection client to connect to the game servers. This IS a F2P online cardgame afterall.

limes95: Guys, this game is F2P and you can get a big amount of cards without paying a cent, but development needs to be paid too, so in my opinion if you like the game, theres no problem in supporting it.
Microtransaction-based F2P gaming is antithetical to the concept of DRM-free.

I don't recognize this place anymore. Enjoy your new AAA popularity, but I don't trust you a I did before. You were an example for everyone, now you are just a store.
avatar
Yeshu: Did you missed the note that the game is F2P online and that basicaly means microtransactions to provide the developers income? You can still get cards by playing the game and so far it doesn't feel purposly grindy or forcing you to buy cards.
avatar
cerebropodrido: gwent has had the option to buy cards for real money for a good while yet people only complain about it now? [thinking emoji]
avatar
Yeshu: They didn't actually play the game so the didn't know.
Then CDProjekt should be pushing Gwent on their own site instead of on GOG.

Yeah, if you're going to complain about it at least complain about what it really is...
I'm a little surprised to see this released and advertised here... considering how much they've got to know it's going to annoy people it would have been better to just do it internally in GWENT..

As for your second point, I would imagine just cost and time. Gog and Galaxy already exist so why build, maintain and promote a secondary service? Particularly if GWENT is the only thing to utilise it.
Still I think it could be handled much better so as not to clash with the Gog ideals quite so much...

It is the site that stood up for DRM Free. It would not be hard to put it on their main site or create another one for F2P / MMO / whatever other direction they wish to go in the future... THAT is what annoys people here more than anything else IMO.
What's all this talk about Gwent being online-only & multiplayer-only?

I thought the offline singleplayer "Throne Breaker" campaign was part of Gwent? Or is this something completely separate from Gwent?

Yes, but this Gwent Starter Pack got zero influence on Throne Breaker...

So I still don't see how the hell GWENT is DRM-free.

The GWENT Starter Pack contains::

1x Legendary Card — Choose one of three random Legendary cards to add to your collection
10x Card Kegs — Each contains 5 GWENT cards, one guaranteed to be Rare or better
400x Meteorite Powder — Use it to transmute standard cards into their animated and voiced premium versions

Once you purchase the GWENT Starter Pack, the items included in it will automatically be added to your account and become available the next time you log in to GWENT.
WHY THE HELL IS THIS SHIT ON GOG!?!

So it continues. It began at the very least three and a half years ago, though in fact probably nearly five and a half years ago.

Heh, "GOG ideals"... What's that? Barely a handful of people still around who even remember them it'd seem, and definitely none of the higher ups at GOG, not to mention CDP, who have been pushing the whole thing in this direction for a good number of years now so GOG will just be a cash cow to finance their development work, original mission statement and goals and core community be damned.

Is it actually offline? I've seen no information to that effect.
Ahh, the flames. I'm not disappointed in expecting as much.

I tried gwent for a few hours when it first launched the free demo, and it did have microtransactions even back then. This is just a new way to package it. Although... I find very little 'micro' when the bundles go all the way up to more than the price of Witcher 3 itself when it was brand new. For a consumable, and random content on top. We may need new term to describe this - so far I like to call that "macrotransactions".

Not my favourite packaging of entertainment, and as for the content - this version of gwent is significantly different than what was in game (more complex rules, cards you know from the game have very different effect now).

I think I'll remain in my cave, maybe I'll get back to W3 NG+, I'm already about halfway through it anyway. This stuff better not infect Cyberpunk 2077 though.

eckrakenn: This is a great deal for 5 bucks, guys.
Oh yeah? You can give me $5 for absolutely nothing too.
Just throwing this out there, something to think about...
