JMich: Not even the dos version with the CD images? And what if you encode said images to ogg and use them in the Windows version, still no music?
I'm sure there's a workaround for this, but still, it's a legitimate complaint: the music should just work without having to encode/mount anything.
avatar
omega64: So Quake doesn't have any music due to "licensing" or whatever.

Not sure how to launch the dos version?
I don't know how to encode the images to ogg.

This is exactly why I normally buy from GOG. It just works without jumping through hoops.

From what I understood, the music works, but GOG doesn't have the rights to distribute the ogg files. They do have the rights to distribute the audio cd images, and the game will play music from the audio cds (or oggs, if you can get them).

My bad, there isn't a dos version. The comments about the cd images confused me.
Edit: Thiev to the rescue. See post below mine for correction.

Take a look at the subforum. You should find some threads about it. Alternatively, you can either mount the images or burn them to physical disc, and music should still play.

There is. It is listed as 'Software Mode' in Start Menu or Galaxy.
Question about Quake: is it still good or is it more like Unreal (not Tournament) which had awesome graphics back in the day but is a pretty lackluster shooter. For comparison, I love Doom and Duke 3D.

EDIT: Does Quake even have music? I looked up some YouTube videos and they just have ambient sounds, but no actual music.

This is fucking awesome, from the day I created my account I wanted Doom and now here it is.

One the the first games I played and I absolutely love it.

I still like it and I've never liked Unreal. It's really hard to say. You could download a source port (e.g. Quakespasm) and play the shareware episode.

About the music: It depends on your definition of music. Most of it is great ambience music. The title track starts with a song, that sounds a bit like it could be taken from the Nine Inch Nails album Pretty Hate Machine. But, still no vocals, only cries.

I still play Doom and Duke 3D but I do not like Quake 1.

Quake 2 is still very fun to play, though.

Just my opinion.

I did play Quake recently and I liked it quite a bit, especially for being more dependent on reflexes rather than cover (which is the case with Quake 2). This, coming from a guy that played (for the first time) and enjoyed Blood, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior (the old one) in the last 5 years.

As for the music, there are two things to note:

1) The base game has mostly ambient music, while its 2 mission packs have more of a metal style of music.
2) The GOG version comes with both the DOS and the Windows versions. The DOS version contains music, courtesy of its mounted Audio CD image, while the WIndows version doesn't have any music at all (it initially came in .ogg files, but GOG had to pull them from the release due to licensing issues), so you'll have to provide your own (preferably ripped from the Audio CD image of the DOS Quake version).

I didn't know there was a shareware version, I'll check it out and see for myself then.

Yeah, turns out the music does work in software mode, too bad about the awful resolution and performance though. >_<
I guess I'll just request a refund.

The soundtrack was composed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, which is probably where the legal issues come into play.

If you're unfamiliar with NIN, they switch between industrial rock to ambient and sometimes just harsh noise. (I love that band...)

That's why the nailgun ammo boxes in the game say "NIN" on them :)

Grargar: You can try Master Levels for Doom 2 patch, which can be found here.
Thanks, I assembled the Master Levels into one wad, but do you know where to actually put it in terms of folders/files? Does it need to be in the same folder as Doom 2 wad or...? The readme doesn't actually say anything on this.

What I did to run Master Levels was place the Doom 2 wad and the compiled Master Levels wad in the same folder as GZDoom and then drag the Master Levels wad on GZDoom.exe. When you start a new game, you'll be given a choice to run the vanilla Doom 2 Levels or the Master Levels. There is probably a faster and less tedious way to do this (some bat maybe), but I didn't bother further with it.
