nepundo: I don't know why now it's only in the Funny tab, but this Steam "review" was at the top of the Summary, Most Helpful (12k of 14k people found it useful, 400+ comments) and Negative tabs just a couple of days ago: "A mile wide but an inch deep. I can not express it better."

From your detailed review, it looks like that one-liner describes it pretty well.

To think I was almost tricked by that first trailer with the awesome music where you were flying alongside 3 other ships and a whole fleet warped in from nowhere to engage into combat...

On the other hand, after watching Star Citizen's last video (at Gamescon) I'm quite happy with the direction it's taking, and I feel that No Man's Sky could have been something similar in a certain way. Different game, very different scale and scope (both of the game and the production team), but it looks like NMS could have benefited enormously of crowdfunding/early access, early and iterative releases, features/experiments at will, constant player feedback, and no pressure from a big company or players expecting the delivery of a 60$ AAA game.
From what I've seen of No Man's Sky so far, almost the entire two official trailers are complete and total lies and fluff. The user interface doesn't even look the same as in those. At one spot the ship approaches a trading post with 7 landing pads and the person playing the game has a selector as to which place to land on it, but in the actual game you have to practically fly your ship upside down as slow as possible and randomly hit the E key to land when you think you're magically over top of the structure and then cross your fingers and hope for the best, with about a 50:50 chance that you'll end up landing on the ground beside the thing and have to jetpack yourself up there if you have a powerful enough jetpack upgrade.

Flying with wingmen? Pfft, I call bullshit on that. There is so much bullshit in the trailers they might as well have a brown filter over the video to make it more realistic. In reality random ships just magically appear at random places in the sky and fly around at random just for filler, occasionally landing at the space station. One thing I noticed and Joe commented on in his review also was that the exact same ship with the exact same alien can end up landing in the Space station 2 or 3 times simultaneously, not to mention a named alien will fly away only to come and land again like 10 seconds later. How could they possibly have travelled anywhere useful in that time and picked up any new supplies to come back and trade? I mean if they were going to have such a crappy trading system, they could have at least used the randomized planet name generator and retooled it to make random alien names instead of there being like 10 aliens in the entire game and showing up over and over again often simultaneously like that.

My personal opinion is that the game creator has a vivid imagination and really did want to make this game do all of the things he bragged it could do on television and at game conferences etc. and that he legitimately intended to do that. As time moved on though they realized more and more that while ideas are cheap and easy and can come in abundance, it takes time to write code to actually implement them and when you promise too much too soon and are working on a deadline you sometimes learn that it is impossible to remotely deliver all of the fantasy ideas you envisioned. So I think they ended up having to meet deadlines promised to Sony or face consequences, and when the pressure was on they realized "we have to pare this game down ASAP and put it into a playable state to hit the release target", where by "pare this game down" I mean basically removing every feature that he ever claimed would be present more or less. They could theoretically keep working on the game and provide what was promised as free patches in the future, but they'd have to change so much of the game for it to be a truly fun and rewarding experience that it'd practically end up being a completely different game from what they released currently.

I just can't see that happening personally. They'll likely fix bugs and maybe add a few features, but I think the game is more or less what you see is what you get at this point.

My buddy is nagging me to get his computer back so I might not be able to play it through to the end though. Might have to wait until the next LAN party when he brings it back, or wait for sometime in the future. No way would I pay $66 CAD for it though, maybe $3 in an Insomnia sale in 2019 or something... :)
I completely agree with everything you said in your last paragraph as well. I was thinking much the same myself a few days ago. :)

I'm thinking there must be one of those Cylon reincarnation ships in the NMS universe and that all of the aliens are simply clones. There are about 10 actual aliens of each race, and the rest are just clones, some with the same name and some with a different name.

I wonder what the purpose of the aliens even is now too. You meet them and have to pay them 20 carbon to even talk to you and after you do, they will give you back 50-100 or more carbon and other things of greater value. There is zero logic to it all. An alien is going to die because his suit needs carbon for life support or whatever nonsense, so you give him carbon then without moving from the same chair he permanently sits in, he gives you repeatedly 50+ carbon every 2 or 3 cycles of the conversation. If he had carbon why didn't he just use it to recharge his suit in the first place? Not only that but there are plants that give you carbon 3 feet away from them in every station which is where I often got the carbon from to save their lives or whatever in the first place. If you do not give them any carbon you can sit there and wait forever, or go outside and wait and come back and they never die. Just about everything that happens in the game is pure random fantasy nonsense. All conversations, and especially the "lore" if it's worthy of being called that. Crazy.

The game is absolutely loaded full of nonsense like that which makes no sense and pretty much requires that you permanently enable maximum suspension of disbelief pretty much all the way through. :)

I did find most of the alien monuments to look cool though, and they were the most varied of all structures in the game. :)
Here's the Zero Punctuation for it, in case it hasn't already been posted, And here is the wishlist entry for Elite Dangerous, a real MAN and WOMAN's game.
Whilst ED clearly has more than NMS, be careful what you wish for. Although it does look good, it is a really really grindy game.

Also, you have to be logged into the server constantly, even when playing solo (something that Braben said we wouldn't need to but he changed that before release) so I doubt GOG could, or would even be allowed, to bring it here.

But one can hope...

Far more likely for it to come here with Galaxy requirement then than DRM-Free I imagine
Finished the game, wrote my final thoughts in the other NMS thread already just now. TL;DR version - great walking/mining simulator. :)
Rumor has it that Sony is dropping NMS on next months PSN Plus free games list, to justify the subscription price hike.
