Please let us download cloud saves WITHOUT installing Galaxy?

I used to play GOG games via GOG Galaxy. However, I have since then moved over to Linux. That was, I think, a year ago - longer than that, I think. However, I actually forgot to back up some of my saves when moving over. They are still in the GOG Galaxy cloud, I think. However, you can't install GOG Galaxy on Linux. So the only way for me to gain access is by installing a VM, downloading GOG Galaxy there, downloading the saves, and then sending them to my Google Drive account so I can retrieve them on Linux. Pretty fucking dumb.

Why can't we download them directly from the browser?

It would seem to me it'd be easier to write a script to copy/paste your saves to a USB stick and take it with you between machines, rather than manually download the saves via browser.

It's doable. Performance isn't great, but that shouldn't matter for retrieving some cloud save backups.

Because for people who don't care about Achievements / time tracking, that would give them less of a reason to 'need' a client. I don't know what your solution is other than temporarily installing Galaxy to download them all, but for cloud saves on Linux there's cross-platform software that (aside from being a great game save backup in general) can also mirror local saves to a cloud provider of your choice (Google Drive, OneDrive, DropBox, etc), and you can also manually download them from any browser on any OS:-

Just install Galaxy with Lutris and download all tour save then remove Galaxy, GOG will probably not make cloud save available without Galaxy so it's your only option now.

That probably wasn't a consideration since the only way for the cloud saves to make it to the cloud was by using a client.

I hate to say it but the situation you're in is an edge case that would almost never come up so it's unlikely they would devote resources to developing a solution to this.

You absolutely can run Galaxy on Linux. I've been able to do it with no problems using only WINE for months now. Galaxy does have laggy mouse input but otherwise is totally functional.

However, what you are asking for is not even technically possible as I understand it. It's not like all games automatically have cloud saving. Most are just saving to your HD. Then on exit Galaxy is scanning the save folder and uploading the saves. But without galaxy what would track the saves and upload them online?

So requesting cloud saves without a client of some kind is not possible.

Is there any guarantee that a save in Windows would work as a save in Linux?
It seems to me that the file format would likely be incompatible.

I am of course not talking about a Wine or Lutris usage scenario.

Why would it be? There's no advantage to making save files incompatible based on OS, and would in fact take extra work to do so. Data is just data. Like there's no "Windows" JPG or a "Linux" JPG. A possible scenario for incompatibility is if the Linux version is out of date compared to the Windows version, and some kind of save-breaking change occurred in the newer version. That's not super likely though. A bigger problem is finding out where the game expects the save files to be, because it's not always obvious and no OS has ever managed to come up with a standard place for them.

If they use text files, then the line endings could be different, if they use the system standard, but most parsers should have no problems with that. That's the only difference I can think of.
Enconding for english texts should not be a problem, most progammers would use UTF anyway.

For a year now, Heroic Games Launcher has had GOG cloud saves.

edit: and running Galaxy on Wine is an atrocious experience. Nevermind the sluggish input and glitchy UI, the obscure installation and update errors will make you ragequit. I recommend lgogdownloader/Heroic instead, hard recommend.

edit edit: lgogdownloader lets you download (and upload) cloud saves as well. I think that's been there longer than a year.

JPG is of course a very common format. I have no idea how common a save file format between games is or whether each game has its own particular structure. And while in theory, as you say, it would be extra work to do different data files for different OS, the OS versions of a game are different, so why not save files ... might only be something minor, but that's all it would take to be incompatible. That said, the game could possibly easily recognize such and cope with it.

Anyway, just pure speculation on my part, and you may well be right. :)
