During 2017 The 8bit Guy made a game

* Develop for the C64

* Physical release (floppy disk & cassette, box & manual)

* Make the game an RTS based on his first game

And you'll get Planet X2.

I Came across this kinda by accident, there's a nice detailed making-of video where he goes into detail on it and it's quite fascinating. And it's part of the homebrew scene, even if it is unlikely to sell millions of copies.

Also he's making a Planet X3 now for MS-DOS. Looks very interesting.
Now I just need to get a Commodore 64 (or 128, I guess).

Perhaps. It is mentioned that when you purchase from him you'd get a disk image emailed to you, so you could play it via emulation if you wanted, so you don't require a C64/C128 to play the game.

Alas i never grew up with a C64, i grew up with Atari800, which is in the same class/family of the time.

Yeah, you do. It's more fun to play on original hardware though.

It looks good for a c64 game but I woudn't call it homebrew when plenty of C64 games were made like that back when it was out.

... i think Homebrew is closer to homemade, or without a studio/company, actually without even a publisher as this is pretty much word of mouth. Watching the making of, it literally was like 3 people. Him, another musician, some beta testers, and an artist for the cover and doing the book/box work.

Even the Planet X3 he's working on he pretty much as far as i can tell, hired a pixel artist and that's about it... and some of the previews look awesome.

Course he has said he will likely do a kick-starter for Planet X3, which is mostly to cover physical costs of pre-ordering physical materials and get an idea of how many to get made in bulk. Then again the companies want orders of 500. He also might hire a second artist or more from the current artist, not sure. Almost everything else is done by him.

Actually got an email from him, but i can't help him with adlib sound so can't do much there.

He got on my radar a couple years ago, lot of interesting stuff talking about old hardware and it's limits, sorta like LGR except a little more hands on. He's done an exceptional job of explaining how the sprites and graphical details of 8bit hardware actually work.

Kinda curious these naturally aligning communities that crop up on YouTube.

Yeah. The term is used to indicate that a beer is brewed at home rather than at a larger brewery, and the use has leaked into other industries as well, such as software development.

Its always cool when someone makes a new game for old hardware, especially something as awesome as the Commodore 64.
I'm not sure it's the kind of game I would enjoy nowadays, surely I would have had fun with it back when I still had my old C64, but the making of it was very interesting and enjoyable. The final product looks gorgeous, so much detail was put into everything, from the box and physical contents to the game itself, it was a work of passion and I'm glad it has been well received and has positive reviews.

The 8-Bit Guy is one of my favorite YouTubers, it always makes my day when a new video of him (and also from his other channel, 8-Bit Keys) appears in my subscriptions. I really recommend it, especially for those who love the Commodore 64 and old technology in general. :)
