Thanks for bearing with us in this thread. We’d like to announce that today we’ve introduced the addition of new installers, with implemented GOG Galaxy client.

Like Destro described it back in May, we decided to separate the „new" and „classic” installers, for your choice. So if you don’t care about the features like achievements or cloud-saves and don’t want to use GOG Galaxy, you can download the „Classic Game Installer", just like it was handled before. For games that have new installers, the default download view on „My account” will show the "GOG Galaxy Game Installers" - you will notice that, as it is visibly described in „My account” game view. To download the „classic” ones, just go to „Options" and choose „Classic Installers”.

The new GOG Galaxy Game Installers were added to +100 games - a selection of all games that make use of GOG Galaxy features. I'll post the current list of games with the new installers in a separate post.
Going forward, all new games that will use GOG Galaxy features, will now receive both GOG Galaxy Game Installer and Classic Game Installer.

Introduction of GOG Galaxy Game Installers doesn’t change anything in terms of keeping the Classic Game Installers up to date. As soon as we receive an update for any game, we will prepare an updated version of the classic installer, just like it was done in the past.

Edit: Pinned.

HunchBluntley: I don't want to download an installer for a 23-year-old game where 60-95% of the installer's (now bloated) size is crap related to Galaxy.
You're gonna need a bigger backup. :/

I'm not happy with this change too!

I've always found Galaxy's promotion too aggressive. The web site is full of Galaxy's banners, without an option to get rid of them, even for users logged in through a totally unsupported system (my main system is FreeBSD and GOG constantly treats it like Windows). Thankfully things are better through Linux.

I always use custom installation process, so it's unlikely to end up with Galaxy installed. The main problem I see here is that all this Galaxy promotion doesn't fit well with the DRM-free approach and the optional client statement. The fact that GOG has dropped many of its principles, is also not reasuring.

I was hoping someone working with programming would have said something but alright, here I go:

Since it seems you are set on doing it this way, have you done this, or something similar, to mitigate the problems?

PROBLEM: Galaxy client is a 150MB download (I just looked), adding that much to say a hundred games will add ~14.6GB data one has to store on more hard disk space and possible sqeeze into a download quota.
SOLUTION?: Only bundle a miniscule downloader of Galaxy or just a link that opens up the Galaxy download web page. I am no pro, maybe there are better ways.

PROBLEM: A customer who does not want Galaxy accidentally forgets to untick the 'download and install Galaxy and then proceed to install this game through that' box.
SOLUTION?: A possibility to decline before the download, or at least before the install.

Elmofongo: Who wanted a GOG Galaxy? Who asked for a client? Are people that lazy and ignorant that they can't put thier installers in a new folder?
A lot of people... like it or not most prefer a client. There was actually a wishlist entry for it as well. However, doesn't mean we shouldn't call out shitty behavior, and I think GOG is handling this badly.

Fables is deleting my posts complaining about it.

Not to worry, I'm keeping copies. :P

"They already fucking made that announcement when they fucking took our fucking notifications away without letting us fucking know and then had the fucking nerve to tell us it was their fucking plan to fucking change it later so that all the fucking people who don't use fucking Galaxy will eventually get their fucking notifications back, because after all, Galaxy is totally fucking optional."

IronArcturus: Here is the ominous future that many people on GOG are worried about:

1. GOG releases just the offline installer for the game.
2. GOG releases Galaxy and says it's optional.
3. GOG merges Galaxy with the installers and users are now forced to uncheck it for installation.
4. GOG makes Galaxy mandatory to play the game and offline installers are made inaccessible.

How do we know step 4 is not going to be made a reality?
Reminds me of meme.

Also I want to talk to the manager.

"As many new users discover and download games from our website, we don’t want them to end up with installations that don’t auto-update or backup saves to the cloud. In fact, we want to offer everyone the most convenient experience from the get-go. "

I do no not want to make sure every time I install a game, that I click everytime a box to opt out of Galaxy, the reeks of Adware-practices.

I do not want cloud saves.

I do not want a third party client auto updating any files on my system.

Convenience:
The most convenient experience is to download the bought game from the account page, install it and double-click the link on the desktop.

Updates:
That this company never managed to implement a convenient website based working notifcation system for updates is a red flag for your inability GOG, not me as a user.

To show my appreciation of this move by you, GOG: The first day a downloadable installation file contains this checkbox, is the first time I will make a Steam Account. Now I am rolling with you, every next move will make me leave GOG a bit more. Because the difference gets blurry.

Even as a Galaxy User, I don`t like the idea.

Why not just "advertising" Galaxy while installing, like its done for other games?

An offline Installer should be free of bloatware as much as possible and if you want to bundle a small Galaxy downloader with the Installer standard should at least be "not ticked".

This is a bad idea. Offline installers shouldn't include Galaxy Client and install it by default. A lot of people will not know about this. I was expecting gog to push in to forced client use more and more but this is a bit over the top.

Galaxy Client should be offered as an option but not as a default download with every offline installer. A lot of unnecessary data and people who only wan't drm-free stuff will see this as a major push in to drm front from gogs side. Bad idea. Hope you reconsider this.

GR00T: I have to agree: make the default a non-Galaxy installation and have the customer tick the box if they want Galaxy. Otherwise you're resorting to stealth installing just like so many annoying adware/malware programs.
Exactly! It's like I am in a good restaurant and I ordered soup.
When it comes on the table it has flies in it.
I complain about it but waiter explains "Flies are optional ingredients of our soup. If you don't like flies in soup then you can pick and remove by yourself".

WTF GOG!!! I don't want flies in my soup.

Why stop here? You guys should also include steam, uplay, origin, hell, just a random install of securom also. :P

People downloading offline installers already clearly don't want Galaxy, stop aggressively trying to force it onto everyone!

fables22: Starting on Friday, we’re going to include the option to install the GOG Galaxy client from the offline installers downloaded via GOG.com in over 100 games.
Starting on Friday I will have to stop buying new games on GOG, because I don't want my backed up offline installers to include a pre-selected option to install the "optional" Galaxy client. After almost 1500 games my library seems to have reached its final size. Thank you for disgruntling your most loyal customers with your *#$@ marketing and PR stunts lately!
