Thanks for bearing with us in this thread. We’d like to announce that today we’ve introduced the addition of new installers, with implemented GOG Galaxy client.

Like Destro described it back in May, we decided to separate the „new" and „classic” installers, for your choice. So if you don’t care about the features like achievements or cloud-saves and don’t want to use GOG Galaxy, you can download the „Classic Game Installer", just like it was handled before. For games that have new installers, the default download view on „My account” will show the "GOG Galaxy Game Installers" - you will notice that, as it is visibly described in „My account” game view. To download the „classic” ones, just go to „Options" and choose „Classic Installers”.

The new GOG Galaxy Game Installers were added to +100 games - a selection of all games that make use of GOG Galaxy features. I'll post the current list of games with the new installers in a separate post.
Going forward, all new games that will use GOG Galaxy features, will now receive both GOG Galaxy Game Installer and Classic Game Installer.

Introduction of GOG Galaxy Game Installers doesn’t change anything in terms of keeping the Classic Game Installers up to date. As soon as we receive an update for any game, we will prepare an updated version of the classic installer, just like it was done in the past.

Edit: Pinned.

I have a UI suggestion:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...explanatory text about what Galaxy is and
how the installer can download it..."

[ Install game | Install game + GOG Galaxy | Cancel ]
------------------------------------------------------------------------

No checkbox required. ^_^

This would be a nice compromise in my opinion.
Have the choice to just get the game and also clearly labelling for the user so they would know they are getting the game and Galaxy.

This is what I would expected the future update to be.

The "masterminds" of the GOG team have already come up with the perfect solution:

"As for the option being opted in as default - after careful consideration, we've decided to go with this because we believe that it's easier for an experienced user to uncheck the box than it would be for a new user to figure out how to turn the feature on."

After all, customers can't be trusted to be able to think for themselves. You're all just a walking, breathing wallet.

muntdefems: Another reason for switching to Linux. Come, come to the light side... :D
Don't feel too safe, with Galaxy more and more going the non-optional route they may even finish the Linux version of Galaxy now...

Damn, I see I've missed some real shit today. Funny how always when I'm offline for even just a day, that's when shit hits the fan.

I'm not going to go through 16 pages of this right now, but I doubt there's anything here that would change what I want to say, though I'm sure the same has been said many times- it's a terrible idea and I hate like i hate Hayden Christensen showing up at the end of Return of the Jedi. At this point Galaxy should be treated as malware.

Realy, between this and the notifications working only for Galaxy GOG is only maintaining the flimsiest pretense of not trying to make Galaxy mandatory. I guess I need to backup installers to have ones without your malware client crap. This is exactly the kind of smarmy, disrespectful, sneaky, shitty way of pushing your client I was talking about in the notifications thread.

Good job. Galaxy is no longer optional. It's not using it that's optional, and yes, that's a difference. And the way things are going, nothing's going to be optional before the year is out. For our convenience of course.

Indeed, that would be the right way to do it! And not to bloat every offline installer with Galaxy and force people to deselect it every time they install a game as the people which use the offline installers are most likely those which do not want to use Galaxy. People which want to use Galaxy probably do not use offline installers that often. ;)
Greedy eyes watched the world of Steam far away in another Galaxy then they attacked and were beaten as Steam has no limits to the games they sell.Sound familiar? It's from the War of the Worlds with a couple of changes:)

Gilozard: People who are downloading individual installers are precisely the people who don't want Galaxy! It's the norm for gamers to install a client if they want it. People downloading individual installers are already trying to opt out of Galaxy.

This is hassle that you are explicitly aiming at people who are clearly trying to opt out of Galaxy. The given reasoning is nonsense.
Exactly that! Explicitly targeting people which do not want to use Galaxy. People which use Galaxy do not use offline installers that often if at all. And for new users it's completely sufficient to show them a message about the Galaxy client and provide a download link if they do not already use Galaxy on their own.

Just saw this announcement.

I've mentioned it already on these forums before. I don't dislike DRM all that much, especially if it's just unobtrusive web activation, as much as I dislike clients. Given a choice of DRMfree + client or DRM + Clientfree I'd choose the latter.

The reason I dislike Steam, and the reason I've been using GOG when I can is that Steam has a client that you have to use.

If Galaxy becomes compulsory, or if you make it de facto compulsory by ensuring that features like updates, patches, etc only can be used with Galaxy so that "optional" becomes just an empty word then... I'll just switch to Steam. If I'm using a client I might as well use one that functions properly, and is not in permanent (haha) "beta".

EDIT:
Also, having an automatically checked extra program in an isntaller that I didn't ask for is bloatware at best, and in fact borderline malware.

Well, good job GOG, this cleared my wishlist better than any sale. I just removed all the afflicted games from my wishlist, went from 60 to 49 in a blink of an eye. A shame about some of those, I was realy looking forward to playing them eventually.
