Ah! My bad - you are correct, it should be 5-5-5. I must have hit the 8 when I was putting in the *.

? = What, When, Where, Who ... (single letter) --> "W"
* = Three Gregorian months start with this --> "J"
To be or not && --> "2B"

EDIT: Hmm, I misread the second one, sorry, so that's not correct. It's supposedly two characters.
