kornarakis: "INSTALLATION FAILED: DISK ACCESS PROBLEM"
My experience has been that while this error message can be indicative of a faulty SSD/HDD, it's more likely to be attributable to (a) lack of space [as a reminder, the game needs 35-40GB of space] or (b) an anti-virus solution gone rogue and blocking access to files that it has incorrectly identified as a virus (false positive).

Yeah man, don't get discouraged, we have plenty of good and helpful people at these forums.

Tallima: but I'm not sure your issue is typical.

MikeMaximus: Recently, it actually is pretty typical to have installs/updates fail in Galaxy with that "Disk Access Problem" error.

I've had that error message with at least three game updates (even one clean installation) in the last two weeks, which required downloading them all over again.

I remember seeing a blue acknowledge that they are working on it, but I can't remember which thread it was in.
Was it this thread?

Anyway, yeah, this version of Galaxy has been troublesome with all of the disk access errors; I had it happen to me twice, for Jazzpunk and Hollow Knight. The failed Hollow Knight update would even completely crash my Galaxy, so I couldn't even Verify/Repair, like the blues keep suggesting we do; I had to download the installer from the site and "update" (read "re-install") the game using the offline installer to finally get Galaxy working properly again.

Fortunately, as far from being 100% stable and perfect as Galaxy is, on GOG you do have ways around issues such as these, like not using the client altogether. Though I would assume it's not very practical for someone who's used to Steam/uPlay/Origin clients to manually download the various parts of a game as big as Witcher 3 (although, even then, there are download managers that can help).

Well, maybe you shouldn't spend so much time on gaming anyway...you'd better spend your time wooing beautiful women and having intercourse with them. Too much gaming isn't healthy.

Meh. Women are overrated. Gaming's where it's at, dude. Yeah, totally... O_o

kornarakis: Thanks all for your help.

I will try one the next days to download the game with the classic installer and try to update it to see if it works .
Do give the 'Classic' installers a try. It's what I used to play Witcher 3 and had no issues whatsoever. Great game, and since you paid a lot of money for it, you really should make sure you try everything you can to experience its awesomeness.

Well, that's just what caused some of MY worst experiences... so I'm not sure I can recommend it.

Tallima: OP: GOG isn't quite as smooth as steam. But they have things steam does not. You can back up your games
Steam has a backup option for years now

avatar
Tallima: , install on multiple computers in your home (my brother and I try to get our whole family into a massive empire earth game every year or two) and galaxy has some neat options.
That is basically piracy. One copy, one pc not "i install it everywhere i want because i can and let other people play it. As i said, piracy, nothing else.

Actually Galaxy is still a pretty pathetic piece of shit, especially compared to Steam. Amazing considering Galaxy is nearly 3 years old, yet still looks and behaves like a very early beta.

You can back up some steam games. You can back up all gog games. Dr-free installers give that to you.

And as for piracy, it most certainly is not.
From gog support page:

Yes. We do not limit the number of installations or reinstallations, as long as you install your purchased games on computers in your household. So yeah, if you've got a render-farm in the basement, you might actually break the world record for the number of legal Witcher installations in one household. However, if you think about installing your game on a friend's machine or sharing it with others then please don't do it, okay? The same principle applies to movies - you're free to watch them anywhere you want, with anyone you want, as long as you don't share them with people who haven't purchased them.
If I purchase a multi-player game and I want to play it with my son and there are no multiplayer-drm issues (like nwn2), then I can play it. One purchase for your household.
Now if my son turns 18 and moves out, he'll have to buy his own copy.

In the case of my brother, his family and my family can play on two copies of empire earth. We all live under two roofs.

It's the way games were before the major drm-slap made it one copy per player. After that, they quit making couch co-op, started imposing serials for playing, and suddenly, a family had to shell out $200 for a game that used to cost $50 (thereby removing me from buying the game).

Anyhoots, I go by the one purchase per household. I don't see a point in buying my while family a copy of the game from each player when gog said it was fine.

kornarakis: I just lost 50 euros for a game I cannot play because of your app. (yes I am not losing one more day for installing the game again).

Great work ...
avatar
Breja: You do know you don't have to use Galaxy, right? Just don't use it, and voila- 50 euro un-wasted.
Aren't you forced to use galaxy for Witcher 3?

No, you are not.

Of course you have to take care not to get any STDs.
Still, what's more likely as a regret on one's deathbed...not having had enough sex, or not having played enough games?
I think the answer should be obvious.

I installed Witcher 3 through Galaxy quite a while ago. It would always launch Galaxy for me when using the desktop icon for Witcher 3. I guess I never put much thought into it. I just tried launching the .exe directly, and it launched without galaxy.
