So I've used Firefox for YEARS and have quite a lot of bookmarks that I rely on to go where I need to go. I don't even remember a lot of the passwords because the bookmarks just take me there and do the password. But I'm going to be moving to a new rig soon (today or tomorrow it looks like) and so was wondering.

Is the only way I'm going to move all of those bookmarks to take a pen and paper and write down the address verbatim for each one, type in each one in the new browser and/or new rig, and then bookmark them there? Or is there a more convenient way?

Tyranny Commander Edition for the best answer (gift code already in hand). It will be a SUBJECTIVE decision, based on my abilities and knowledge (lack thereof) so please don't hate me (too much more). I will chat message the code to whoever I select as the best answer. If you're interested I may do another one with Tyranny that doesn't involve anything subjective and everyone has the same chance.

Export them from the old computer (should be an option in the bookmarks manager view) and import them in the new one, or just move the whole profile folder. Moving the profile folder may require a couple more steps, but should move everything (not just bookmarks).

Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Backup. Save the file, then transfer it to new rig. On new rig start firefox, then bookmarks > import and backup > restore. Use the file from previous rig.

OMG, I found it!!! (See screenshot). That's about as easy as it gets LOL. Holy cow I'm so sorry now. I should've looked at this earlier. Gonna mark the first response as best just for being quick. (EDIT: And as it happens, pretty darn informative too LOL) Will be sending JMich the Tyranny code in a minute.

With regards to passwords, never let a browser keep these for you. Its always best to keep passwords as far away as possible from where they are used. I use a secure usb stick with portable apps installed on it and keypass:

In this way the passwords are available, just plugin and enter the one password to get to the portable drive, then the keypass password, then you can copy/paste from there or generate random ones (as you would not want to use anything guessable!). Storing passwords or in fact any personal data locally is just asking for problems. I don't even let Firefox keep the session information, everything is wiped at close.

The "privacy is important!" part of me points out that you;re feeding Moz your data.

If that's important to you, do the file export and import as suggested up above.

Yeah I know. But I'm thinking I'm just going to do it to set up all the bookmarks on the new rig, then once all the bookmarks are set up.. unsync (or whatever you do to get out of that thing) and then change all of my passwords. Every. Last. One. Of. Them. I haven't changed but a few in at least 3 or 4 years so I really just need to change them all. If I can get my bookmarks set up and get into the ones that I may have forgotten the password to, then that's what I'm shooting for. And then change them all. And write them down on a piece of paper. Low tech in this case is probably the most secure (assuming I don't lose that piece of paper LOL).

If you want to stay logged in for a lot of sites, you will need the cookies those sites have put on your Firefox. I GUESS this is where moving your FF profile comes in. Sure I never let a browser remember my passwords for me but not everyone wants to do it like that.

New FF v59 out just now too :-)

There are some sites I don't mind staying logged into (Gog is one) but none of my financial services sites do I want to stay logged into. (credit card, banking, etc. and I don't stay logged into them anyway... they won't let me LOL. I have to type the password for them every time.). I just really need to start over... make all new passwords.. and then type them in each time for all of my sites (with the possible exception of GoG since I come here every day without fail).
