[This is a sticky post, it will be visible in every single page of this thread. It has been published in October 2020.]

Our moderation team decided not to take a side in the discussion since this giveaway thread was created by the community and, as long as there are no forum rules violated, is up to you, dear Gogers, to decide its fate. We will not set giveaway rules, edit the OP's post, nor lock the whole thread.

However, to make it easier for newcomers to understand the situation (about the OP being inactive and other), I will stick my own post right above the first one.

You are, of course, free to create new threads to start anew and make your own, clear rules. At the same time, please stay reasonable when crating them, as multiple new duplicates might make it even more confusing for many Gogers.

That being said, here you can find a post with dxenija's community poll to have better understanding of the situation: CLICK.

At the time of writing, open giveaway threads are:
- Massive Giveaways Blog (this one)
- Free (temporary) keys giveaway central topic.
- Updated Itch.io giveaways

Be nice to each other *flies away*

xynkurosawa: How do I play it? There are like ten .exe files and none of them worked. Also, kind of hilarious how every file that the game consists of is in the main folder.

twifight: I checked the file myself and it's just a standard renpy structure.
The most probable issue is that you somehow extracted all the files into the same folder, instead of keeping the folder structure.
Yes, that was that, game works now. Something with my 7zip, it usually works fine, but this time I had to open the file, select everything and then copy it somewhere, only then it worked.

I am familiar with what you are seeing. When you extract the zip file, all files are in a single folder with no subfolders. On my system, this was caused by the archiving program I was using. I my experience, this issue has been unique to some zipped downloads from IndieGala when trying to use 7-zip to extract them.

I found that if I used another compression program to do the extraction (I have WinRAR, HaoZip, and the Windows built-in "Extract all..." context menu dialog), the zip file extracts properly with subfolders intact.

=========================

EDIT: after doing a bit of research, I found the cause. Whatever tool is being used to create these zip files is explicitly using a backslash (\) character as a path separator. Under the ZIP file standards, a forward slash (/) is supposed to be used. Most archiving software will respond the same regardless of which character is used. 7-zip, however, aims for code and functional compatibility between its Linux and Windows versions.

Under Linux, a backslash is an allowed character within a filename. As such, Linux ZIP archives explicitly use the forward slash character as the path separator. Any backslashes are considered to be a part of the filename. Since version 22.01, 7-zip's code was changed to follow the Linux ZIP format.

This prevents archives using backslash path separators from being extracted properly on windows machines. This issue has been reported, but 7-zip's developers insist this is not a bug, but instead intended behavior. Their only advice is to contact the maker of whatever tool is being used to create the archives and demand they follow the published specs to build proper archives,

In the meantime, we will have to use other compression software to handle such archives.

I'm 100% certain this is a Windows-only game. The Steam version is Windows only, and the download from Indiegala is marked for Windows. No other OS version.

I'm a 7-Zip user personally and when I inspected my download, I merely looked in its contents without extracting it. Even after extracting it now, no issues were present.

This has to somehow be user error on their end. Not the file proper. They even had to extract it in a weird way just to solve their problem.

Just because you have 7-zip does not mean you are using it. When you double-click on a zip file in Windows, you are using Windows File Explorer to look at its contents. Try right clicking on the file and opening it with 7-zip, instead. Unless you are still using a very old version (19.1 or older) you will see what is being discussed.

This is an issue with 7-zip that the authors of that program have already verified ( https://sourceforge.net/p/sevenzip/bugs/2548 ) It is not, and in fact could not be, "user error", as there is no setting that can change this behavior,. It is an intentional choice on the part of 7-zip's designers in how their program works. This has nothing to do with what platform the contents of the ZIP file are intended to be used on; it has to do with what program created the specific ZIP file, what that program uses to represent a path separator, and what 7-zip expects for path separator. 7zip expects a forward slash (/) while this archive uses a backslash (\). The former is both part of the specification for ZIP files and what is mandated by all *nix systems. The latter is what Windows has been using. Most compression programs support both. The current version of 7-zip only supports the forward slash.
