A interestingly large number of Americans believe that an apology is not necessary due to the casualties Japan inflicted and for some of their war crimes. They're sort of thinking "They attacked first and deserved it, and it was necessary since it took 2 bombs to get them to surrender."

If you're asking as far as the moral implications of the event goes, the textbooks I've read tend to be pretty even on the debate, presenting both sides of the argument evenly.

If you're asking as far as the historical facts of it, supposedly it's only Japan that's changed anything.

I'm personally think that one was bad enough as it was and 2 was overkill, and there should definitely be some apology issued from both sides, but whatever.

I think it's appaling how many people think that what Truman did was right. Truman is a war criminal and should be treated as such.

I remember reading somewhere in National Geographic (Nat Geo maps were apparently used by military planners) that from the reports that had come in from the US campaign on Okinawa, the military had estimated as many as 1,000,000+ casualties if US forces had attempted to take the Japanese home islands in a traditional ground campaign.

It's also worth noting that while the Japanese make a big deal about the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (and I should add, rightfully so), there's a very conspicuous absence of any public historical acknowledgement as to the underlying reasons as to why the attacks happened in the first place.

I know I'm asking for trouble here, and I'm probably going to be labled a monster and a defender of genocide or whatever, but I think it's insanity to have the Allies apologise to the former Axis countries. It was a horrible war, terrible things happened to everyone, but to have USA apologise to Hitler's allies... hell no. That said, every sane person should hope such terrible things will never happen again. And by no means do I hold the Japan or Germany of today responsible, or harbor any hatred towards them. Please, keep that in mind, so no misunderstandings occur.

Hardly, considering how much money it made for Japan? I think however, that the world should apologise to Emmerich- his Godzilla really wasn't nearly as bad as most people say nowadays. And it was way better than the new one.
