UPDATE: We've added a new option to the Privacy settings in GOG Profiles - from now on you can turn off your profile on GOG entirely, so no one can see any kind of information that is shown on the profile page. This also means that when you turn off your profile, you won’t be visible on your friends’ friends lists, even if they decide to keep their profiles visible.
The option to enable/disable your GOG Profile can be found in your account „Privacy & Settings” options, under „Privacy” tab.

We just introduced a new feature on GOG.COM: User Profiles – a social way to share what you and your friends are up to. See what your friends on GOG are playing, achieving, and sharing across four sections – Feed, Profile, Games and Friends.

Your Feed is the centerpiece of your Profile. Here, you’ll see which games your friends have been playing, all sorts of achievements and milestones, as well as general thoughts, screenshots, and forum activity. You can dispense your approval at whim and share your own stuff as well!

Your Profile is all about you and your gaming accomplishments. It's a summary of your activity, like the time you've spent in your games , your latest achievements (and just how rare they are among other users), as well as a glimpse at what your most active friends have been up to.

If you want to know more about your Games, you need to hit the the third tab. It contains a list of all the games you own on GOG, together with stats like time spent in-game and your progress towards unlocking the achievements. Sort the list, compare stats with your friends, and get some healthy competition going.

Finally – your Friends: get a general summary of their achievements and hours played. Here you'll also see which games are the most popular among your friends right now, so you can join them in multiplayer or find something you might enjoy yourself.

Of course, your profile comes with some sweet personalization options, choose a wallpaper from your game collection and share a few words with the world.

User Profiles are available for all GOG.COM users. Your personal gameplay stats like achievements, time played and milestones depend on GOG Galaxy, but if you’re not using the optional client you can still use the feed, post in it and interact with your friends.

Launching profiles also means adding new privacy settings on our end. You'll find three new Privacy options in your account's „Privacy & settings” area. These settings allow you to set the visibility for your profile summary, your games, your friends, etc.
So what are you waiting for? There's so much room for activities!

xyem: Indeed. I know I can deal with everything else, but not very sure where to start here except getting in contact with developers/studios and asking if I can sell their games Maybe that is all it takes.. :)
avatar
lostwolfe: if this is something you want to seriously pursue, i would absolutely get a lawyer.

if you become a game seller, you will wind up having to sign contracts for those sales/etc. and you are probably going to want someone to look at those contracts.

[incidentally: that seems like the toughest part of the job. that and attracting people to your store.]
I would immediately shop in a store led by xyem! There I would have the confidence that it stays DRM free!

Gersen: ... You will also need to create some company, I don't know how it is in UK but here if you want to create a Corp you need minimum three peoples and 100k CHF of initial funds (IIRC), I suspect it's probably it's not free in the UK either. Granted you are not forced to create a SA/Corporation but it's the safest option in case(when) it fails ...
That part is actually not a big problem in the UK. You can relatively easily found a "Private company limited by shares" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_company_limited_by_shares) which is as safe (limited liability) as what you mentioned but much cheaper to setup, basically just a registration fee and and some paperwork and you are free to start. UK is much more liberal than Switzerland in that regard.

A private company limited by shares can later be converted to a public limited company.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet the next GOG announcement will be:

"Good news! We have noticed that our valued customers are extremely security and privacy-minded, so we have added a security feature to every game installer, both offline and through GALAXY, that connects to our servers when you install your game, and checks if you're the rightful owner, to make sure no one steals your files. This is totally not DRM, guys. lol!"

It's coming, sooner than later.

Some conspiracy theories (sort of) about internal GOG changes are being discussed here now: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/6_community_members_went_to_gog_hq/page1

With some GOG employee answer: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/6_community_members_went_to_gog_hq/post962

Yes, there was a press notice somewhere that together with the 'merger' CDProject will take direct control over GOG.com.
People that "rule GOG" (one of them being one of the GOG creators) didn't change, they became CDP board members. :) That's probably the note you're referring to.

PaterAlf: It's interesting that the privacy settings seem to work much better on mobile devices. When I use my phone, I can't see the number of games, achievements and total time played when everything is set to "only me".

When the profile is open, I can see the numbers though.

This has probably been reported several times ago, but I didn't felt like reading the whole thread (again).
Have not seen this before - but didnt read all the earlier parts of the thread either.

Don't know how to take a screenshot with my phone, but I can assure you that I'm logged in and can't see the number of your games on my mobile (Android, Chrome Browser).

Pangaea666: That would be the big downside, but I at least have to seriously think about it. Most games won't get updates anyway. The big kick in the teeth is if my disk with all the files on go up in smoke.

I can no longer support a company that behaves like a vampire.
avatar
HeartsAndRainbows: I'm currently in a similar position as yourself. My advice would be: Buy a new external harddrive. In my experience those are very robust, reliable and still fit for year-long everyday use. I've been watching movies or installing games directly from my HDD and it has been very handy when visiting friends. (I can both vouch for WD and Seagate and while I'm aware that someone in this thread had troubles with their Seagate overheating I literally never had any complains concerning their products.) The risk of data loss is something that is ever present, but that's a risk you take with GOG already, as they don't appear to have backups of anything on their servers - be it user created contend(/content) or previous versions of their site.

There are a few things I can tell you with relative certainty:
1) This whole issue was caused by GOG's lack of care and compassion for their community. That attitude is here to stay, even if they improve their privacy options a few weeks after the fact. (Which they probably won't...)
2) As you already pointed out: History has shown that games which are not properly patched now might never receive a patch - especially on GOG.
3) Deleting your account is the only certain way out of this. You can (as the TOS suggest) stop using it, but then it will still be open to any future abuse GOG has in store for you.
4-6) Downloading your entire library of installers will take a good while. The space on your harddrive will run out eventually anyway. So there will be no major drawbacks if start downloading now and get yourself a new external harddrive - either order one from a professional online shop (that unlike Amazon only stocks the good stuff) or get one on Monday from your local store ("support your local dealer"). ;)
Currently my main harddisk has around 400GB free, and a good deal of the installers were downloaded previously. Hopefully there is room. I'm also on Linux, so regular backups with Back-In-Time could probably do the trick on an external harddisk, or extra internal one. The risk of total failure can never be removed, but backups will at least reduce it a good deal.

By lack of updates I didn't really mean that GOG don't push them out fast enough or ever, but that most of my games here are unlikely to get more updates. The main one is the upcoming Pillars of Eternity Deadfire. Not sure if it would be possible to get the installers directly from them, without the privacy invasion companies like Steam and GOG as a man-in-the-middle (attack?).

An extra problems arose as well. Struggled for a whole day to sign into GOG (hence the late reply) because they are leeching onto Google's privacy invasion with captcha and suchlike. Had to temporarily unblock the bastards in a separate window.

For once I wish I had a better internet line as this will not be done in a day, but it's a start.

That may just be a glitch on their website.

Just push and hold "on/off" button and press "volume down". Then release both buttons and a screenshot sould have been created.

Some of you proudly show your location but get angry when they show some random numbers in your profile for everyone to see? I don't get it.

Trilarion: That may just be a glitch on their website.
I don't think it's a glitch. Like I said I can see the numbers for open profiles. To me it seems that the privacy settings do different things for the desktop and the mobile version of the site.

Thats weird cause when logged in i can still see the number of games from many profiles , unless they have set that to show, i can still see your number of games, did you set them to be public ? everyhing else says it its private
but the number of games show.
PaterAlf, at least for Android+Chrome, is correct. Private profiles there on mobile don't show the 3 counters for games/ach/hours, while Public do. I have screenshots. Sounds like another Chrome failing or just who knows, if what gamesfreak64 said is also correct. :)
Edit: Actually GOG's site doesn't have a mobile version right? Or at least it's not feeding it to me when I visited?^, so I guess it's just Android+Chrome being bad.

All the Linux installers (that I own on GOG) and extras take just under a terabyte.
