MaGo72: You mean the Exult.cfg? Nevermind.

Ah ok, you have to open it with a text editor.

Hmm wait, before editing.Now it gets tough.

There you go:

11.10. Using the version for OS X from GOG.com

Since January 2013 GOG also offers a download for Mac OS X. It's a disk image (dmg) that you can open in Mac OS X' Finder by doubleclicking it. You will only see one application named "Ultima 7 The Complete Edition". When you start that application you can play both games through a modified version of DOSBox for Mac OS X. If you want to make Exult automatically find the games from this download, you will need to copy the game files from this application to your hard drive. To do this follow the next few steps.

Open Terminal.app found in the Utilitiess subfolder of your Applications folder and enter the following commands:
sudo mkdir -p "/Library/Application Support/Exult/blackgate"
sudo mkdir -p "/Library/Application Support/Exult/serpentisle"
sudo cp -p -R "/Volumes/Ultima 7/Ultima 7 The Complete Edition.app/Contents/Resources/Ultima 7 The Complete Edition.boxer/C.harddisk/U7/ultima7/STATIC" "/Library/Application Support/Exult/blackgate"
sudo cp -p -R "/Volumes/Ultima 7/Ultima 7 The Complete Edition.app/Contents/Resources/Ultima 7 The Complete Edition.boxer/C.harddisk/U7/serpent/STATIC" "/Library/Application Support/Exult/serpentisle"
Because we need elevated rights the commands are using sudo and will ask for your password and you will need to do this with an administrator account. If you don't have that, please ask your administrator to do this for you.
Sometimes GOG changes the disk image and thus the path may have changed. If you get a "file not found" error, try downloading the newest disk image and mounting that. If it still doesn't work visit our forum and tell us.

DizzyCrash: I dont.. use a password to sign into this computer, what sort of password is it asking me for?
avatar
InfraSuperman: After having a closer look at Exult, I'm really not sure whether it's worth the hassle of setting it up.
The graphics are essentially the same as the original DOS version, only with the 2xsai filter enable by default, which, among several others, is also available in DOSbox (see attached pictures). I suppose the sound emulation is nicer, but not by much.
I also seem to have way more technical issues with it than with DOSbox. Particularly the fullscreen option causes several problems, though that may be related to an incompatibility with my graphics card's drivers.
avatar
DizzyCrash: I know.. I just kinda want the sound stuff really bad, its just how I wanna play the game I guess.

Also it doesnt let me type a password, all i can do is press enter which is apparently incorect...
In my opinion it looks a lot better, I tried Exult on Windows.

When you enter sudo + command and hit return Unix should ask for a password. It does not?

Did we even need the exult.cfg? Cause now were using the terminal thing and the exult.cfg config file are not mentioned in these instructions...

also terminal thing wont accept any passwords and i dont even use a password to log into this laptop...

I have no idea what that means... whats unix? Is that the terminal tool I am using?
The terminal tool does ask me for a password, but it wont accept anything and i dont even know what kind of password it wants from me.

I did not read the whole FAQ, I just stumbled over the statement that you do not have alter the config for the path setting when you stick to the conventions.

You can try to point the paths in the config file to the GOG App Subfolders, but make sure you copy it before and name it exult_original.cfg, something like that.

:( How do you point it in the right direction? what are the paths and how do I place them? what text do I replace for them and is that all there is to it?

Do I do something with this?

<config>
<disk>
<data_path>
/Library/Application Support/Exult/data
</data_path>
<game>
<gamename>
<path>
/Library/Application Support/Exult/gamename

</gamedat_path>
<mods>
/Library/Application Support/exult/gamename/mods
</mods>
<patch>
/Library/Application Support/exult/gamename/patch
</patch>
</gamename>

All the parts that say gamename, am I suppose to fill those in? with what?

:c This isnt cool... Iv done everything, why isnt there just some way to tell it right away the paths to reach ultima 7 and move on! Instead theres all this coding and numbers and finding hidden files and why does it have to be so hard? I just want to play... I tried adding that code to the exult.cfg and replacing the word gamename with blackgate, but nothing changed....

But you did install exult and Ultima VII?

:( I guess I will just play the game without it... but knowing theres a more advanced version that I cant access is really upsetting, I just dont have any talent for all this code stuff.. I feel like I am completely lost, theres no direct way of just posting a path in there and moving on and so I will have to play the game the old way...
I wish there was a good youtube video of the whole process i could just fallow step by step..

You should first do this today:

http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202035
http://www.bloodyerror.com/2009/07/mac-os-x-what-is-my-default-sudo-password-root-password/

Although I do not know if it is up to date. I still have 10.6.8 but had the same problem as I had to use sudo the first time.

After you've set the sudo password and do not forget it, run the commands posted some posts earlier to copy the game files in the standard folders. Upper case and lower case letters in names are important and double check what you wrote before hitting return.

Then start Exult and you should be fine.

Welcome to the wonderful world of unix. Unlike in MS-DOS/Win95 where there are no users, or Windows Vista where everyone learned they needed to be SuperUser to blow their nose, Unix had that fixed way early on.

For Unix you have a SuperUser called root who can do anything. Since most people don't know what they are doing, root is reserved for admin tasks and not a good idea to run as. You can easily delete every file on your computer and it won't complain, which is why it isn't active 99.99% of the time.

Then you have normal users. You normally run a normal user who when you try to delete your entire filesystem it just looks at you and gives you a big fat STOP sign and says you can't and pushes you back into the safe sandbox. This is why Viruses don't like Unix based systems, because anything worth infecting is everywhere it can't access and infect.

Anyways, that doesn't really matter. I almost recommend taking a basic course on Linux which will teach you 95% of what you need to know, except file layout because Apple do their own things which you'll have to look up in about OSX. Otherwise all basic commands (tar, cp, cd, cat, less, gzip, exit, bash, ls, etc) carry over with no problem considering it's FreeBSD (4.2 or something, the /proc/ filesystem will probably tell you if you ask it nicely).

Anyways as mentioned if you're only getting a 2xsai effect you might be marginally unimpressed by the mild upgrade which might be best for reading the text which is hard to read with that weird old english font (if i'm thinking of the right game from Ultima Retrospective). Years and years ago I used ZSNES and tried the different basic algorithms, which although they do some of an upgrade it looks like badly done scaling up and line tracing and always made MegaManX look stupid. Some of the algorithms work well, but someone mentioned DosBox might have that built in, meaning Exult might be best for minor patches that fix/adjust text from the game that is otherwise probably impossible to patch.

Are you still having trouble with Exult? If so, I'll reinstall Exult w/Ultima 7 later today and record my steps for you.

:c yeah, I am still having trouble with it.
high rated
You are all making this too complicated, there is no need to edit any files unless you really want to.

Part I - get the files
You need the exult app (obviously) and the Ultima games themselves. Place Extult.app in your Applications folder. Others have already pointed out where the Ultima game files are.

Part II - get the game in place
Now we need to place the game assets where Exult will find them so we can play the games. Open the folder
"/Library/Application Support/Exult".

Note that this is the global Library, not the user Library, since there is no tilde (~) at the beginning of the path. You have to open Finder and go up the folder hierarchy until you are at the top of your hard drive, then you will see the Library folder. If there is no Exult folder in Application Support create it.

Inside Exult make a folders named blackgate and serpentisle respectively. Dump all the files from the games into their respective folders.

Part III - enjoy
That's it, Exult should now be able to see your game files and play the games. However, there will be no music, so you should get the music pack from their website.

Part IV - install music
Get the all-in-one pack for OS X from the website. Run the installer and let it handle things.

If you don't trust the automatic installer you can download the all-in-one ZIP instead. Place the contents of the ZIP in "/Library/Application Support/Exult/data" (create the data folder). Remember, the contents of the ZIP, i.e. the files and the music folder, not a folder containing those files.

EDIT: There is a screenshot attached now.

You have earned at least 27 hugs and kisses!
HiPhish pretty much beat me to the punch -- the installation process is actually really simple. I'm glad that you were able to get the game working. :)
