Ultima 7..
So I bought the game on GOG and downloaded it for my Mac, but I want to play the game in Exult and I have all the peaces here but I still feel like I dont know how to put them together, i cant find any good guides for doing this with a mac but people say its been done so its possible..
I installed Ultima 7 and it runs.. without Dosbox funny enough, maybe the GOG version doesnt need it, than I downloaded Exult and clicked on the Anke symble and it just said i needed to do something with the instiliation folders, but it was very unspecific, can anyone offer a step by step instruction?
A quick google search brought up a ton of guides, the first one even got pictures, so this is probably as easy as it can get.

Example:
www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/how-to-set-up-ultima-vii-in-exult-a-guide-by-jaesun.47447/

You only need to make sure that you're pointing to the GoG folder.

What OS are you using? (Mac doesn't mean anything as it's x86 architecture for the last 5 years).

Beyond that... I'd say if the game runs without exult, go that route...

anyways give me a few minutes i'll glance over Exult and see what it says. Most likely extract the files on top of the installation and use exult instead, but we'll see...

Can you link me? I cant seem to word it properly to find these, they are all for windows computers and not very comprehensive, and it has to be specifically for the GOG version that doesnt use Dosbox.

You only need to change the path, there's no magic in the dosbox version as the game files are simply the same.

When I click it a screen comes up that says could not find the static Data for either "The black gate" or Serpent Isle, please edit the configuration file and restart exult.

It says right at the top (( For this guide I am assuming you have a WINDOWS (XP/Vista/7 COMPUTER)
It wont apply to my situation, i need a mac guide..

Nevermind, sorry, I overread that Mac thing, my bad.
Anyways, you really need only two folders, it's like this on my pc, so that you get what's important:

E:\Gog\Ultima VII - Complete\ULTIMA7

So you basically need to link to the ultima7 folder and to the serpent folder for the Serpent Isle data files.
You can find the config file itself in this location:
exult.sourceforge.net/docs.php#exult_config_location
This gives more insight into the config file:
exult.sourceforge.net/docs.php#path_config_osx

Mac guide.. Hmmm... I don't have a mac...

It's probably a simple configuration file that needs to point to a folder, or extracted on top of Ultima 7 as it assumes the directory/data is it's current. Paths in Mac are unix based, so depending on where the game in installed it would be /home/dizzy/ultima_7/, but that's a guess...

Just off hand, if you can't figure out exult, then ignore it and use the DosBox that's there.

Freakgs: I just gave it a try, it took me 5 seconds to get it running.
During the setup it asks you for the path where the Ultima files are located, that's all you have to do.

In my case it was
for Ultima 7:
"E:\Gog\Ultima VII - Complete\ULTIMA7"
for serpent isle:
"E:\Gog\Ultima VII - Complete\SERPENT"
How do you find the ultima 7 install location on a mac? accessing the "E:\ folder..
Also how do you get it to ask you for the paths? If I click on the application it just tells me that I need to configure stuff, is there a seperate file inside exult that does it?

I kinda really want the crisper graphics and better in game music and sounds that comes with exult.

As I said, my example above applies to Windows systems. My point was just that you need to choose the ultima7 and serpent folders (as I stated above).
According to the documentation you just need to open the config and replace the value of <blackgate><path> *replace this part* </path> with the path to Ultima 7 and the value of <serpentisle><path>*replace this part*</path> with the path to the serpent isles data files.

The paths are indeed different on a mac (as I said) but I don't have a mac to tell you where GoG places their games, so you might want to wait until somebody who owns a mac can answer that question.
The rest is really just replacing two simple values in the config.

Could always right-click the icon and hope it comes up with secondary options, one of which will tell you the details...

OS X uses freeBSD as it's base, so at heart it's a Unix OS. This means you don't use letters for drives, you use mount points instead. Beyond that i don't know where Apple would let you install stuff at, except maybe your own home directory.

I hope you get it all working, i really do.

Ahh the fun of GUIs that make everything easy so long as you don't want to get under the hood. And getting under the hood might involve accessing the commandline and using commands like cat, vi and exit.. (all quite complicated alien stuff).

For now i recommend you ignore Exult and just use DosBox, and hope the saves can be read later on by Exult when you get it working... Or get in touch with someone else locally who uses OS X and get them to tell you step by step (with pictures) what to do.

If I could just get my hands on a direction I am sure I could figure it out from there... Is there no guides for macs online? I cant find any...
I don't have Exult but the paths to the games in OS X are:

/Applications/Ultima\ 7\ The\ Complete\ Edition.app/Contents/Resources/Ultima\ 7\ The\ Complete\ Edition.boxer/C.harddisk/U7/ULTIMA7

/Applications/Ultima\ 7\ The\ Complete\ Edition.app/Contents/Resources/Ultima\ 7\ The\ Complete\ Edition.boxer/C.harddisk/U7/SERPENT
