Theoclymenus: I would be interested to know which CD/DVD games you’ve bought. Just before my old Windows 7 laptop died last April I bought an external optical drive and went a bit crazy buying physical games off EBay, although most of them were advertised as “new, sealed” rather than second-hand.
I got a lot of them working, too, but then my laptop died (: So now I still have the discs but Windows 11 (my new laptop) is another animal altogether and I haven’t yet mustered the energy to try to get them working again. So many great games from that era have just been forgotten because… SafeDisc etc. I own a copy of F1 Challenge 99-02 which I had working perfectly on my W7 laptop, but only because you could re-enable the SafeDisc driver on W7. You can’t do that on W11 unfortunately.
Actually, one of the posters on here - AB_2012 - helped immensely here. I had no idea that it was possible to find DRM-free retail copies of Age of Empires 1&2, Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory, C&C : The First Decade and others before I read his posts on the subject.
- FPS games: all Rainbow Six entries from Rogue Spear to #3 with all expansion packs, plus another tactical FPS, The Regiment: Close-Quarters Counter-Terrorism, and Gunman Chronicles
- a bunch of RTS games, small/large scale, military/fantasy/sci-fi:
Shadow Company: Left for Dead
Korea: Forgotten Conflict
Rise of Nations: Gold Edition (includes Thrones & Patriots)
Rising Kingdoms
Kingdom Under Fire Gold
Armies of Exigo
Universe at War: Earth Assault
Dark Planet: Battle for Natrolis
ParaWorld: Gold Edition
The Show
- others:
Sanity: Aiken's Artifact
Drakensang - Phileasson's Secret
Midway Arcade Treasures
all inexpensive and easy to find, save for one or two. The most costly one was Natrolis, but only because I had to have it shipped from USA (and within reason anyway, for me at least). And it's true that some of them were actually still new and unsealed. Indeed, the only times I had to spend more than I would have liked have been when buying from UK, or Spain, because of shipping costs; games themselves were cheap. I've noticed that German versions are, on average, cheaper and easier to find; unfortunately I can't speak German...
I started looking for physical copies a couple of years ago, mainly because I was getting tired of waiting for, and increasingly skeptical about, some highly desired games ever appearing on GOG. I started with Prey, Future Cop LAPD, Project IGI, among others. I had refrained from doing that previously because I thought old games were all very rare and expensive, and very difficult to get working. Well, I'm happy to have been proven wrong on both counts: so far I've been able to find pretty much everything I've been looking for (save for the occasional ultra-rare title, or sold for millions on eBay), and everything has worked reasonably well. Plus you can find find plenty of hints and guides on the internet. I was afraid games with SafeDisc wouldn't function but I found out I can run them as well. Having access to an old-ish PC really helps, of course - I just hope it doesn't die like your laptop...
I'm not a "serious" collector and I will gleefully overlook big box editions in pristine condition with all extras etc. in favour of budget reissues or even loose discs. This obviously helps in paying less.
Of course, it's entirely possible that some of those games actually end up on GOG after all - indeed, it's already happened a couple of times.
Unfortunately some games are perennially off-limits: all those requiring online activation of some sort. And so far, I haven't mustered the courage to try games with StarForce, as I'm afraid they could make a real mess (but maybe I'm exaggerating...)
(FYI: there are workarounds for SafeDisc. You might want to take a look at www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Digital_rights_management_(DRM)#SafeDisc if you haven't already)
Falci: Since then, I found a new job, and my second child has been born, so I haven't been having a lot of time to game, which made me keep myself on the backlog, a bunch of emulators, and way less ESO than I was having.
Congratulations from me, too.
