A single-player space simulation that places you at the helm of a spacefaring company – Helium Rain is now available to grab for free!

Trade resources, buy ships and stations to fulfill contracts. Dock at stations to buy and sell your wares or upgrade your ship. Upgrade your technology to be more efficient and militarize your fleet to prevent piracy.

You will need to master both real-time action and long-term strategy: destroying a freighter has a direct impact on the economy, while declaring war will make your spaceflight environment slightly more hostile…

This is stupendous, as I had wishlisted Helium Rain for quite some time!

Is anyone aware of the underlying reason as to why it was made free of charge?

It seems so. In an announcement on the Steam pages for both games the developer said:

It's been about a decade since I first started prototyping a space game - one where you'd start off with a small ship and trade resources. Two games, three game engines and 15,000 copies sold later, here am I with a new life where I don't quite have the time for such work anymore.

Deimos Games will be shutting down this year. Both Helium Rain and Astral Shipwright will be going free-to-play, so that new players can still experience them in the future. As a reminder, both are also open-source, so if you were going to build anything based on these projects, you now have access to free content too. It's been refreshing to see game developers reuse code for their own projects, and I hope that will continue.

I want to thank all players who supported me on this endeavour. I'm truly happy that I was able to share my work with you.

Looks interesting. Not the thing I'd normally pick up, but I'll give it a go eventually. At least it's a free game without any "trusted partners" strings attached.

Another item off from my wishlist. Thank you GOG and Deimos Games. Though it's a pity that we're getting the game in such circumstances.

BTW - I'd wish more developers released their products into public domain when they go out of business.
