DarrkPhoenix: I'm just hoping that the rest of the political institutions here in the US are able to keep things from completely going off the rails. Guess it's time to see how well those checks and balances actually hold up.
He is only 1 man and certain things he can't implement without the Senate.
God damn America. What are you doing!?
I thought us voting for Brexit was bad enough.. but electing Trump?
I really can't imagine how this is going to go for the next four years, but I can't imagine it will be good.

jamyskis: I think we're heading towards a new wave of anti-Americanism of the kind that we saw in the early 2000s, and this time it won't be unentirely unjustified. When Bush Jr. was elected, few people could really have fathomed the chaos that he would bring to the world and the Middle East, something which ultimately has echoes leading to this day in the form of ISIS and the refugee crisis.

But the Americans have voted for Trump knowing what he is, so everything anti-American that happens at this point is on their own shoulders. I tried keep separate my disdain of the US political establshment from a disdain of the people, and I was wrong to do so. Personally I was wrong to trust Americans - like the British, you can't trust them as far as you can throw them.

I'm now just worried about Europe being sandwiched between two Putinist dictatorships now. I think it's really only a matter of time until the two collaborate to install puppet dictatorships here with UKIP/BNP, FN, AfD/NPD, Fidesz/Jobbik, Golden Dawn, PiS among others. Russia is already almost certainly involved with the AfD, UKIP and has already been confirmed to be involved with the FN.
Its okay no need to start crying.

LiquidOxygen80: People take this shit far too seriously. I can be your friend and not agree with you in every facet of life, ideals, etc. I don't get the absurd amounts of hyperbole that people in general stoop to. If you're honestly so self-centered that you cannot abide the thought of someone out there disagreeing with you and not being a terrible person for doing so, then perhaps you shouldn't mingle with people at all.

( I say this all in generalities, not aiming this at any particular party. If you're being a drama-king/queen right now, knock it off. It's all politics as usual.) :P
It's like anything else, such as sports. People associate themselves with the competition and take losses and wins as personal.
A sad phenomena, really...
Still don't really know what to think of this, but this sure was an interesting election.

Sad? Why, lol.
Empathy is a good quality of a man.

Telika: The thing is, the usa, and the world, are made of tautos, of maximumbunnys, of awaeltj, of infinity9, of kingsbradleys... They are not a fringe minority of drooling evil cunts. They are mankind. They are what it means, biologically, cognitively, to be a human being. There is no evolutionary jump between the 30s and us today. Humans have the same abilities, the same mental horizons. You can stretch the elastic but this is its resting state, and it'll always come back to it.

It does not make it okay, but, as a species, we aren't.
True. I've always been of the mind that democracy also means having to accept the judgement of those whose opinions you find inherently "flawed", for better or worse.
Which of course begs the question whether the "two party system" the US seems to have going for itself is in any way well suited for getting desirable results. Especially considering the "protest votes", which is something I believe the German AfD hugely benefits from. Now, imagine it was either/or - AfD or Green party, to choose two parties from rather opposite ends of the spectrum - one shudders at the thought.

Edit: Aaand, google tells me Trump made it.
As the OP stated so aptly - good luck, everyone :)

Not when we start fighting each other over it.
Take for example the Netherlands vs. Germany soccer rivalry.

For sure. I mean, I understand for a lot of the younger crowd. Youth tends to overreact to EVERYthing, but there's been more than a few people who defo aren't acting their age over this. I'm glad someone is keeping a level head in all this drama. Whether or not I like someone is not predicated on them being a clone of me. I'd find that extremely boring.

Tauto: Sure, you would expect them to be polite but what about the strain on the Government funds? I see that lady is not very popular anymore.
That is basically the only valid argument presented by the right, and of course it's a matter of healthy debate whether helping people in need is money well-spent. If you don't, that's your opinion, and that's fine. Of course, I do think we've let in too many refugees, but a lot of that is down to other EU states bellyaching about refugees and refusing to take them in, so Germany has had to shoulder the lot of them.

Merkel's popularity is not declining specifically because of the refugee crisis, but because she's tone-deaf to the political climate. She wasn't wrong to ignore the PEGIDA and AfD supporters with those whose "concerns" were based on shouting "Islam is evil, hur, dur" over and over again, but she was wrong to ignore the concerns of citizens who had legitimate worries about such a large influx of people unfamiliar with our culture.

Ironically, because Syria is largely a secular society, Syrians are actually having an easier time of integrating here than say, the Eritreans or Afghans. My wife is working with a Syrian refugee at her workplace, and I collaborate with two Syrian English>Arabic translators in my line of work. Neither of us have had any problems. There's certainly an immediate strain on the government budget, but I suspect that it will taper off as more and more refugees start earning their own money.
Congrats to everyone whose guy won. I hate politicians and celebrities so this whole thing has struck me like a battle between a bottle of ipecac and a pile of rotting lemons, but at least the election is finally over. No more campaign commercials! Maybe now we can all go back to getting along?

Side note: this year has seen Brexit, the Cubs winning the World Series, and Trump getting elected. All the impossible things are happening at once, and I suddenly feel the urge to buy a lottery ticket.

TARFU: This election day feels like choosing a seat on the Titanic. 1st class, 2nd class, or 3rd class, the ship is still going down.
Ha! Too true. Or like sitting in a free clinic waiting for test results to come back; no matter what happens, it's impossible to feel good about the series of events that led you there.
Donald J. Trump = Only in America lol.
What a weird world we live in...
Good luck, America?

More like God bless America! :)
