catpower1980: Well, you two still have the option of moving to Wallonia as it has been under the left-wing for decades (and it's not gonna change soon). Although I'm not sure you could handle what real socialism (not the US one) is :o)
vulchor: Wallonia is a part of the Netherlands, currect? My European ancestors emmigrated from the Netherlands, although I'm not sure if they were Walloons. Unfortunately unless you are rich it seems next to impossible for a US citizen to move to a European nation. Otherwise I'd do it immediately.
I'm curious as to why you said I couldn't handle that type of socialism? Is it like the democratic-socialism of Sweden and Norway? Those are the political attiutudes that I believe I share most, and I love what the Dutch do as well, especially their environmental reforms.
Prior to the independence of Belgium, it was either part of Netherlands or France, depending on the international situation through History.
I say "real" socialism as while we have a lot of advantages (most of medical care is nearly free, good social welfare, cheap colleges/university, etc.), it clashes with the economy. You're a boss and wanna hire somebody? You'll have to pay the equivalent of around the monthly salary in monthly taxes. You wanna start a LLC (to avoid personal liabilities)? You'll have to pay 18.500 euros just to establish it. No wonder a third of our jobs is in the public sector :o)
There is enough material to write a book about it but the TLDR is that pure socialism without any regards to economy just leaves a poor territory with no prosperous future. It's common knowledge that if Wallonia were to get its independence, it would quickly end up like Greece. So, the trade-off for you as an American would be getting into a "lack of perspectives" paradigm. It's a bit like between living in Detroit or Los Angeles: you can be poor in both but you'll have more opportunities to improve your situation in the latest.
PS: Look at the map in this article, even the recent refugees don't want to stay in Wallonia :o)
