Psykopat89: How do I stop the client from auto updating on launch?
avatar
JMich: 1) You shouldn't really stop it from checking for updates. Quite curious as to why you'd want to do this.
2) Run the client with the /runwithoutupdating flag. But you really should be letting it check for updates.
I never said I want it to stop CHECKING for updates. I said I want to make it stop auto updating on launch (or at any point, really). The key here being I want to update when I choose. It can be very inconvenient when I just want to quickly launch a game through the client and it has to update first - sometimes the servers are just crap, and it literally takes several minutes. I'd like to update, but on my terms, when I choose. It should never force that shit.

When you say I should run the client with the /runwithoutupdating flag, do you mean as a command added in a shortcut, or something else? Also, will this prevent me from manually updating, so I have to be adding and removing this flag all the time?

Frankly GOG should just add an option to manually opt in to click "update now" or something like that. I mean, their whole shtick is about "your client, your terms" - that's what they've been tooting ever since before we could even download a beta. Why not be persistent about it? Don't become Steam, please.

Yes. In the shortcut you use to run Galaxy, adding this flag will prevent from checking for updates. No idea about whether you're able to check for updates later on, this flag was mentioned in the "Galaxy Patch for Windows XP" thread, which is already running Galaxy in unsupported ways.

Thanks - but then again that's quite inconvenient, as I actually *want* to update every now and then, just on my own time, and it would quickly become a pain to be adding / removing it al the time.

@GOG - can we just have an option for this? Thanks.
Anyone else have a problem where GOG Galaxy creates a "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" popup every time they start the compter? It's getting kinda annoying and wonder if there's a fix (short of reinstalling GOG, that is).

Interesting. I wonder if the client still works online when setting this flag and/or if you can still connect online once you are behind a released update.

If so, I would say this is a security concern with it being public now. We really don't need people connecting to the Galaxy network on old outdated versions.

What operating system are you using? It should not happen. I would be grateful if you would put a bug report on http://mantis.gog.com

How is it a security concern? We could block older Galaxy versions if we wanted to do so. We do show an outdated message for some very old versions. But they are meant for the user convenience really, so he does not experience some broken features.

Johny.: How is it a security concern? We could block all the Galaxy versions if we wanted to do. We do show an outdated message for some very old versions.
Well then that makes it less of an issue but I would say in a general sense outdated software is always a security concern especially when connecting to online networks (not only for GOG in the case of Galaxy, but the user as well because online attacks usually target users running outdated software). In my experience you also don't want users to be able to utilize any potential bug or bypass of a old version that could impact the system that has been fixed in a newer patch due to allowing a user to connect with outdated software. Not that it would happen but could potentially increase the risk.

However, if GOG can blacklist certain versions from your end (which I kind of assumed you could but had no real confirmation on) then I assume GOG could blacklist said version from being able to connect to the network if some potential major security issue was found with that outdated version which at least protects GOG.

Which bring up another matter outside of security, allowing outdated software to connect to the network can cause adverse bugs and crashes due to broken features or missing features, or bugs already fixed. Which could potentially increase support emails I assume and waste support time.

Again probably not a huge issue as long as GOG blacklist all really old versions from connecting to the network when significant feature updates are released.

All in all though, I'm of the mind that forcing updates keeps things simple for all involved and prevents some of these penitential issues... just my 2 cents. It's worth the arguably minimal amount of bandwidth and time.

Hi,
i have installed Withcher 3 GOTY, but i am unable to run the game from the Galaxy, "play" button is grey. Galaxy offers me to install the Blood and WIne but it is already installed, because I have done it manually. To run the game i have to go to the folder and execute it manualy.
Galaxy download speed is terrible at the moment anyone else having issues? Checked my connection and its fine.
Is anyone else experiencing issues with time tracking? I've noticed it with Jade Empire and The Witcher. Contrary to others games, Windows requests admin rights to run the game in both cases (even when launching Galaxy as admin). After launching both games with admin rights, the play button's no longer greyed out. Galaxy tracked the play time for both games correctly in the past.

Perhaps there is a Problem with the servers.

I'm getting the message "There was a problem with updating the application. You can always download the latest version from: https://www.gog.com/galaxy" every time Galaxy starts up now.

Downloading the installer and re-running it just says that I already have the latest version (1.2.26), but the message still persists.

This has been happening since I ran the Fall Creators update for Windows 10, so I'm guessing that might be related - but I'm not sure exactly what's causing it. Any suggestions?
