Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

tfishell: Hey Destro, I'm curious: would it be possible for Galaxy to make multiplayer easier for older games like Dungeon Keeper 2, Theme Hospital, etc., or will that be left for services like GameRanger? I don't know how all this works but my understanding is trying to make multiplayer work for some of the older GOG games can be difficult, which makes me wonder if, in some way, Galaxy could make it easier.

I believe I've asked this question in the past but don't remember the answer or possibilities.

In any case, keep up the good work! :) Hope that Galaxy allows many more highly-desired games to show up here. (Looks like some of the missing Worms games will be appearing here sometime in the middle of this year, presumably coinciding with the release of Galaxy. And it'd be top if Gearbox ended up bringing Homeworlds here thanks to Galaxy. :)
Thanks for the feedback. The app you've mentioned is used to create virtual LANs so that users can play many older games with LAN modes games over internet. It's a very interesting concept but there is a limited number of things we can focus at once. Pius, as you've said, there are apps who already take care of it well.
Could use "recent" played on the taskbar jumplist. Looks pretty empty with just Open, Unpin and Close.....

Camoufrage: I've run into another bizarre issue with Galaxy that I can't really figure out.

When I try to install a game, Fallout in particular, the install stops and tells me that there is not enough disk place. This isn't true, as I clearly have hundreds of gigs free on my hard drive. Going to try downloading thru the site and then connecting it to Galaxy.

Destro: Could you please report it to http://mantis.gog.com together with your Client logs (see top sticky post for instructions). Without this we can't really guess what could the issue be.
Just installed that, no problems, for me.

Did have a slight issue with NWN:Diamond crashing to desktop when clicking to skip the intro splash screens, though. If I pressed ESC or just let them play, it goes through alright to the game main menu.

Seems like my whole library (148 games) is now compatible with GOG Galaxy. Wonderful job guys, it keeps getting better!
Is it currently possible to install games in different languages through Galaxy? Let's say I'd like to play a certain game in English, but another one in German, would I be able to install both through Galaxy? When downloading an installer under Game Extras, there's a language option, but I can't find one when trying to just install a game.
I'm sure a lot of people alredy said this, but it would be so cool if you could put your games in a manual order. It's s mall feature on the site, but I really love it! So It would be awesome if the Galaxy client would do the same :)
I had an error importing king's bounty dark side folder into galaxy wich i reported (1696). Had a similar one with Mount and Blade warband.
I think both are related with the dlc content wich isnt showing on the extras downloads in galaxy.
If i just install the base game the galaxy client adds it correctly, if i then install the dlc, it fail to properly recognize it.
Hope this back/forward function gets added to the library as well. Awfully frustrating when I miss the dropdown install button and end up clicking on the game which in turn takes me to the game's page instead. Also browser shortcut keys for it would be nice like ALT + left/right.

Many games, majority of them, have their languages built in, which you can change in game. Only some (few) bigger titles, like Witcher 3, with gigs of voice-overs per language require separate downloads for other languages.

The standalone installer language dropdown (same as the one on the website) is not clear in this regard, as it always shows list of languages, no matter if they are built in or not (meaning if game is in 2 languages, there will be 2 options in the dropdown, even though it results in the same download).

Galaxy install option is a bit better in this regard, as it shows ab extra dropdown to change language in More -> Configure section only if languages requires additional download. Normally it show's "English" which is not entirely true as game can include many languages obviously.

We will address both of these issues in the long run, and for now simply check if Configure menu includes a language switcher or not - if it doesn't, it means you have the language built in (and in case you will find exception to this rule, please report it to mantis.gog.com :)

Thank you, that will come in handy.

Just got kindly accepted into the Alpha and tried to download Rise Of The Triad. Will report back, so far so good.

For games with DLC, there is a incompatibility between old installers and current version in the Galaxy Content System. It will be fixed but you will likely either have to redownload the installer once it's fixed or just Install the game using the Client now (it should install DLCs automatically but if it won't, we'll fix this soon).

Yup, planned. For now it's only available in store, as it's better to have it al least there than nowhere (as previously :)

Sorry to reply twice but I just tried the import functionality.

It would be great in future if you could expand the feature to scan an entire directory (Example C:\GOG Games\) for all compatible games installed by the old GOG downloader. I only have a modest sized library so it isn't so bad to go in each manually but for those with extensive collections a means to import all installations at once to the Galaxy client would be very welcomed.
Another small design criticism: When using the option "Run GOG Galaxy at WIndows startup", I would like to have it start minimized so that I don't have to do so manually every time.

Version 0.7.0.860 already does that. It scanned the installation folder for all my GOG games and integrated, updated all compatible titles into the client. The rest was added manually, but queueable. When installing the games from my account library the client queued all my actions, scanned the default installation directory for files and then integrated existing games or downloaded missing games. The client however DOES NOT integrate old game bundles like Heroes Chronicles.

Overall ... nice build, the right way to go but still a loooooooooong way to go. Performance is very sluggish during installation or download. Navigating the shop or the library is only possible when no background process happens. And then its still sluggish and slow, compared to using a normal browser or other clients like Steam or Origin.

Could you post to mantis.gog.com a video showing how it looks outside of installation / download on your system together with details about your OS version and SP installed as well as antivirus / firewall used, together with your PC config (CPU, RAM, HDD/SDD...)? I'm not claiming the Client is times faster than a browser or anything like that, but judging by your description it sounds much worse than it should be...

Thanks for clarifying that. I just reported two of these exceptions. ;)

Another thing: Right now, Galaxy automatically logs me in when starting up, but I'd really prefer if it asked for my password instead each time. Will this be a feature in an upcoming build?
