Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Many thanks for the invite. Here's looking forward to a great client influenced by a great community.

Even though this is a very basic representation, I'm already liking how uncluttered it feels compared to other gaming clients I use.

CyberTails: (Flame Shield Up)

So I'm running the Galaxy Client, it runs fine and then it asks me to update, so I go ahead and update it and then this error happened

Yes, I'm running XP SP3 because I don't have a copy of 7 or 8 and Linux, a good portion of my stuff I do (capture video and certain games) I can't even do on the system (hence of the Flame Shield)
yeah that tends to happen, what version are you on? I only ask because the current version is 0.7.0.860 and if you already got that version and you can ignore that update message and still use the client, just do ignore it and move on.

I do agree with that one, I'm looking forward to the future with Galaxy (and achievement support :))

EDIT: @DCT: I'm running 0.7.0.860, thanks for the heads up, I'll ignore the update :)

I was wondering if GOG has a sortname in their DB to sort games correctly like every good DB should have. Now all those games that have several parts (i.e. Atlantis 1-3, Broken Sword 1-5 ect.) are sorted wrong. If the games would be sorted by a sortname in which the games are called Atlantis 1, Atlantis 2, Atlantis 3, Broken Sword 1, Broken Sword 2 ect. this would not happen. Please add this to both Galaxy and normal library.

BKGaming: Update appears to have screwed up Mount and Blade Warband which is now showing as "Unknown Game Version" and it seems like I can no longer access any DLC.
Games that have DLC and were installed with previous alpha will appear like that in the Client - we had to make some changes in 0.7. Sadly the only fix here is a reinstall
Looks nice so far, really looking forward to the auto update on games.

exosquadron: I was going to report to mantis that the back/forward buttons didn't work when accessing a game's store page through the wishlist, but re-reading the update makes it seem like it's not supposed to yet.
The back/forward navigation is still in a bit clunky shape (still better than not having it). Ultimately it will work across entire Client, not just in Store.
Also FYI, if anyone has Rayman Forever in their Library (not sure if this applies to other games). If you have Avast Antivirus, make sure that you have the path "C:\GOG Games" and "C:\GOG Games\!Download\temp" into the exclusions list at Settings > Active Protection > File System Shield > Exclusions before downloading the game, otherwise some files will not be downloaded (Mapper I know is one of them) and the game may not function properly

Either this or allow a manual sorting method (a la Web-based game shelf).

Personalized Categories would be nice too.

So how does DLC work now, can you still select DLC or does it automatically install it? I don't see standalone DLC installers listed anymore either under game extra's.

So, just installed the alpha. Install went very smoothly, I've just reconfigured Galaxy to point to my usual games installation folder, just installing Knights of the Old Republic now. Download speed seems to be topping out at around 5.4 MB/s, which is par for the course with my connection. Nothing unusual there.

Not discovered any severe crashes right now and haven't had a chance to test out auto-update, but a few things that do strike me:

* The font rendering looks absolutely horrendous. Seems to be missing anti-aliasing or smoothing (anyone who's tried to run KDE apps under GNOME under any flavour of Linux probably knows what I'm talking about).
* Recent games seem to be missing their images, most notably the unbundled versions of X-Wing and Tiefighter and the Collector's CD editions of these. I assume this is simply due to internal GOG workflows not yet actually uploading bespoke Galaxy images when a game is released.
* If you click on More/Manage/Show Folder while a game is installing, it'll open the GalaxyClient folder for some reason. It might be better to grey out and disable that particular option while the game is installing or configuring.

MarkoH01: No arguing about the need for it to be optimized but the option to not start it with windows start is already available if you access the settings menu.
Still, it's a shit load of memory to be used by such a seemingly streamlined program. It doesn't seem to be a memory leak, as it's been sat at around 270,000K at my end for a while, so all I can assume is that it's using some very inefficient variant of WebKit (like Steam).
a few things I's like to see improved are more view as options, specifically a 'tiny' list / grid setting, second being able to assign games to a custom genre and finally being able to mark an existing gog game as downloaded so you don't need to delete all your existing game files to have them load through the client. other than that I really like it and cant wait to see what further improvements are made.

There will be a Linux version?
The only issue that I'm finding is I cannot change the game install/download/temp directory to anything outside of my user folder.

I have a few hard drives (C, D, & E), the GOG Galaxy Client is installed on E:\ where I keep all my programs, but when in the client and trying to pick a GOG Games folder, it only lets me select directories inside my C:\user\xxxx folder, and I can't type the install directory manually. Kind of lame.

I won't be able to toy with the client until I can actually choose where to install my games.

Yes this is stated in the first post.
