Do you even know what Steamworks is?
When you buy a game from Steam, you will need Steam to run it; no surprises there.
Steamworks means the game will require Steam regardless of where you bought it; retail copy or another digital distributor.

Thanks for the replies. I was reading "this game is NOT a steam keycode game." as "you cannot activate on steam" but the consensus seems to be that it means "this is not a steamworks game."

Just to clarify things a bit -- NO version of Borderlands is steamworks or requires steam to play, except the ones you get from Steam.

Borderlands GOTY, however, comes with a CDkey that you CAN redeem on steam if you want to. You aren't forced to do it, however, and you can just as well install and play from your dvds without bothering with steam at all.

Edit: I've just noticed that the original Borderlands is also label as Steamworks ...!? Well, not as good as I thought then.

Only Civ 5 is on steam Civ 4 uses probably their downloader. Thanks for the info on the deal.

Not on install, but when they create the game account, they create you an origin account if you don't have one.
It rerally doesn't matter, origin games don't need origin running to work, it's more of a installer than anything else

Civ4 Complete is an awesome deal, especially if you use a $5 coupon. If you want to spice up the game, there are a lot of awesome mods by now, e.g. Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn and Fall from Heaven (plus submods like Rise from Erebus or Master of Mana). Just looking at the awesome 200+ pages pdf manual of FfH makes me want to play it again...
(Also, it's available on steam, but maybe Amazon sells a non-steam version)

Speaking about Borderlands... 3€ is a tempting price and I don't care about Steam stats/achievements. Also I usually don't have enough patience to explore every bit of the game and I can't even finish most of the games. But do DLCs make much difference in playability of the game? Are there any aspects of the gameplay seriously improved by DLCs or maybe vanilla is enough to have several hours of good fun?

I'll relay my experience regarding Borderlands, which I own on Steam. Note I haven't played the DLCs despite some or all of them (I forget, my Steam games list surprises me with what I own sometimes).

I purchased it with the intent of playing it with some of my friends (I also bought a 4pack, and following said decision came to notice my friends had all accounted for their own. I have since given these out).

In the beginning, I didn't play online what-so-ever, and apparently I found the game to be interesting enough to play for roughly 50 hours in the first 4 days I owned it.

It has a sense of humour that will stop you taking the game seriously and a difficulty curve that will make sure as you move through the game you're challenged but shouldn't be overwhelmed.

The storyline presented will have some characters who're amusing (I recommend always doing the missions to find Patricia's logs, I found them amusing as well as insightful) and some moments which will put you into some hot tension.

It will however feel quite repetitious at times as the enemies become recycled and the quests will be generic "Acquire X" or "Kill Y". It is fun enough and the environments change around that you should be entertained long enough to justify the purchase. It game's RPG aspects will enable you to cater your character to your specific play style, though this could take time to develop since there are 4 playable characters.

As a multiplayer game, it becomes even more fun, as you all enable each other to speed up virtually any fight and prevents tedium in certain areas.

There are some control issues and there are various things people personally disagree with about things such as inventory but a quick google will find you all recommended changes to make the game more fun.

In summary: I played the hell out of the vanilla game and I don't regret the purchase (which was a lot more than you'll pay now). It is fun and if you find people to play it with it can be a fun experience with friends old or new.
